I believe you are referring to: Tools > Options > Portable / Audio Device > [Choose Device] > Configure > Options > Auto Sync > Setting: "Delete Files and Playlists not included in the Auto Sync List from the device" with the sub-option "Confirm Deletion (recommended)".
I have, in the past, used this setting, and seen it in action. However, it does not address the :ADD action. I'd like to see, for example, the results of adding a new playlist to the Auto-Sync listing, and verify that the 22 tracks I inserted into the playlist will, indeed, be exactly and only what the next sync session will change.
This all arises out of a series of mysterious sync sessions where things I expected to change on the device did not seem too. For example, if I add Album Art to the track tag, and thus the track has changed and should be synced, WILL it in fact be synced? I understand that that particular example is also governed by settings relating to which files would be synced. But, that's my point. If I change a setting, or make updates to my media files in a third party app or within MM, what does MM think it should then do with the relevant files NOW?
It's cumbersome to make changes, and then check the device manually, after the sync, to try to verify what you expect would happen. (And, sometimes, if you make more than one simple change, it's likely you'll not even remember what to check for...) And there's NO visibility on what might ALSO be happening that you don't expect. Days later, you hit your phone for tunes on the road and
What? What? Noooo! Where did {Artist X] GO?!?!? Had I seen a preview - or a LOG - I could at least have a way to see the problem as it happens and then try to figure out how to get it to do what I wanted.
PLenty of other sync utilities provide a preview. Many allow you to uncheck individual actions as well. I guess I'm missing that functionality here.
Thanks
Don
