Most of the music players I've tested have significant problems with curating and managing your files in a coherent and useful way. Some even can't do smart playlists, or playlists at all without a lot of work on the user's part. And when importing your existing files, they leave out metadata, most notably Apple Music doesn't import the ratings of the mp3s. They import other metadata but not the ratings. What's up with that? I'm not re-rating 15 years worth of songs.
Winamp is now only for mobile and has leaned into the streaming artist. I suppose this is fine, but I don't care about any of that. I just want to play my own music, that I have locally, and use the ratings, genre, tempo, mood, etc to create a playlist. If I want to explore new artists, there are methods for that.
But that is what I am after. I want Winamp back. Most of the winamp projects have been abandoned or just aren't mature, even for basic playlists.
It's a shame we are resting all our hopes on MediaMonkey. Even though MM has drifted into streaming, and video, and all that other stuff, I really just like the way the music libraries give power to the user. If a company could do that, they'd crack this MacOS market.
Oh look, ChatGPT 5.3 is now live with CodeX for MacOS. MM may want to look into this as a fast track to conversion.
