Newbie question: mark songs in library to never be played?

I would love to have this feature. It works well in iTunes. Rather then remove tracks from the library altogether, it allows you to leave them in tact in the context of the album, but off all random playlists.

If I'm playing an album, then the introductary or commentary tracks make sense. If I'm playing random, they should be skipped since out of context of the concert they make no sense. So removing them from the library isn't good.

Playlists are not really a solution either. I should be able to select a genre, artist, composer or whatever and random play from it without certain tracks being choosen. It would be very akward and time consuming to make a playlist for every possible selection criteria. Also, custom fields are not visible on the ipod.

Sort of.

First, playlists & auto-playlists do not filter. Each playlist is independent from each other.

You can simply set similar criteria, modifying each one to suit your specific need.

It is currently not possible to do what you want because those features (a check box for each track) is not part of MM.

If you don't want the files to show up in the artist node, REMOVE the tracks from the library.

There is nothing in MM that will selectively hide or exclude specific tracks/artists/albums.

If you want to experiment with auto-playlists before buying gold, use the advanced search... it is exactly the same as what you use to build auto-playlists (except its not saved).

Between auto-playlists and auto-dj, you can avoid playing tracks you don't want to hear. Please try it out.

OK, suppose I were to purchase the gold version and use the autoplaylist idea -- I rate all the songs I don't want to listen to with a "bomb", and then create an autoplaylist that weeds out all the "bomb" tracks. Now would I then have to play everything and build all my other playlists filtered through that autoplaylist? Wouldn't the Artist node then become useless because it would still play all the "bomb" tracks?

The playlist would need to be an auto-playlist which is a Gold feature.

Can you not simply use one of the 3 custom fields?

a) Rename Custom 1 to Play,
b) Edit your tracks ( or globally revise the MDB) to set Play = Yes ( or Play = No)
c) Create a Playlist to only include/exclude items where Play=Yes ( or Play=No)

No.

Inaccessible media means like external drives/usb players/etc that are disconnected.

You have basically 2 options, remove the files from the library (ie press delete, select remove from library only) and don't re-scan, or use ratings as I mentioned earlier.

To setup syncs, you can use playlists/auto-playlists which you can base off ratings and many other criteria.

The idea for both auto-dj (its like an auto enqueue shuffle play thing) and syncing is to make effective use of auto-playlists.

Auto-playlists are a 'gold' feature so that might not be suitable, but thats about all you can do.

After looking into MM's features a bit more, it looks like the "inaccessible media" feature is kinda similar to what I'm looking for -- a subset of the library that never gets played and shows up in the library as grayed-out. So the question is: is there any to "trick" or "force" MM into making certain tracks inaccessible, even when they are accessible?

No there no equivilant feature, however you can put lower ratings on those files and utilize the auto-dj feature in conjunction with the applicable playlist.

Is there any way to mark certain songs in the library so that they never get played (in any mode -- continuous or shuffle) unless directly double-clicked on?

In other words, I'm in the process of migrating my music library over from iTunes to MediaMonkey and am trying to find an equivalent in MM to the checkbox feature in iTunes where you can simply uncheck songs to make them always get skipped over (as well as excluded from iPod syncs). I find this feature quite useful because I like to weed out songs that I don't want to hear anymore, but still want to see them listed along with everything else in the library.
