Yes, I have been pulling the plug before "terminating". I allowed it to run for awhile and terminated the session and next time I started sync there were less tracks in the que.

Next issue, occasionally the sync will hang on one track forever (may not actually be forever but over night is close enough) forcing a restart of the sync without termination.

How do you terminate the sync process?
You are unplugging the cord without terminating the sync?

Try to right click the bottom sync progress bar and select 'Terminate'.

While syncing to phone MM wants to "touch" every track. I have approx. 7500 tracks going to the phone and have yet been able to get them all on because I have to eventually pull the cord when I leave for work or whatever. Then the whole process starts again when I plug in the next time. Even when the track is already written to the device MM still "checks it" or wastes a second or two. At 7500 tracks that's 7500 seconds > 125min > 2 hours to sync after all tracks are written.... Anything I can do to help?
