That's weird.

The file must have ripped properly, because otherwise the other application wouldn't be able to read it either. So the problem is with Media Monkey reading the files. I don't believe the problem is in your hardrive at all. That sounds like a problem in the database. I've had things like this happen before.

See what happens if you create a new Media Monkey database, and have it search the folder structure that contains the files.

close Media Monkey, rename the MM.DB, and open Media Monkey. I think it should prompt to build a new database. Point it to the folder structure and let it rip. I suspect all the files will work fine. If it doesn't work, you can restore the database doing the opposite.

Ok. Sounds like good stuff and keep going, but I meant try ripping with a different "optical drive and/or program". :)
(not just trying stuff out on another hdd/ssd(?))

I used Explorer to find the file that MM couldn't play, then opened the file using VLC player - it worked fine. I then moved that track in the library across onto a different drive and then it played fine on MM.

Ok, I thought, maybe it's a problem with the shared drive, so I moved all of it over to an external USB 3.0 drive. Now a lot that didn't want to play before do seem to. However there are certain ones that when I try to play them, go straight to another track, leaving the original track greyed out. The strange thing is if I locate that file with VLC player it does play perfectly. I noted the link on dealing with greyed out tracks above, I will take a look at that to see if I can fix them.

If it turs out that they can't be recovered, I'll see if I can put them back in

Have you attempted to rip the disc(s) with more than one drive and/or more than one program?

yes, I've done that; it seems that the ripping actually just stops happening, it doesn't go to the end of the disc. It gets to a random track, then spins its wheels until finally just stopping. Not sure what to make of it, as stated it can play the CD perfectly if you aren't trying to rip it

It seems to be something with the discs where there is a discrepancy between the process of simply reading it for playback and what
it interprets from the sectors of the disc to rip it.

I've had things like that happen before but only on rare occasion.

Have you tried "Secure Read" mode like I asked in previous post?

*EDITED TO MAKE A BIT OF SENSE!*

Here's the bizarre thing... if I insert the CD, MM plays all the tracks of the discs that have the corrupted ripped files perfectly. I choose one that locks up MM and it plays as sweetly as you can ever want. What is going on?

Are the discs you are suspecting all or most of your discs?
When you ripped those problem discs in MM, did you rip in "secure read" mode?
I usually use dBpoweramp (pay) to rip.

I rip all my CD's using Exact Audio Copy on an old box I keep around just for ripping. It's been a while since I've set it up, but as I recall I used the step below paranoid mode. Then I had it auto convert the WAV to FLAC.

Took some time, but you only have to do it once if you keep solid backups.

It can't just be the program, it must be the ripped files, as using a laptop with a clean install shows that the same file locks up MM.

Looks like I need to find a program that can rip the discs I have, as mentioned the CD's play perfectly in a CD player

Cheers

Now it has started with 'Not Responding' every time.... I suspect a de-install will follow!

nope, tried that. Nothing.

I can select certain files that were ripped to .WAV by MM, and they just don't start, or in fact do anything. The CD's play perfectly in a CD player, so I'm mystified

Have you tried messing around with your Output-Plugin configurations.
Try disabling all the settings for the current plug-in as test reference. If it doesn't
work, try another plug-in with settings disabled.

No, the selected tracks are not greyed out.

Occasionally, a track will appear to be playing if you look at the progress bar, but all you hear is a tenth of a second burst of the track every ten seconds or so, and always the same bit

Are the tracks that don't play skipped over and greyed-out?
Or, they appear to be trying to play, you just don't hear anything?
