i think the system will be hardware based rather than software. apple themselves have no need to share songs with other software - itunes already does that and can share library with other copies of itunes on the same network.

just my opinion though, no actual evidence

it is perfectly possible. i do it all the time. sounds like you phone or itunes went funny - it happens sometimes. have you done a restore on the phone and tried again?
