Befuddled Beginner with Befuddled Beginner Question...

Post by Guest » Mon Apr 07, 2008 3:12 pm

I consider myself fairly intelligent and like to find the answers to things myself, but between the 'Search' function returning way too many "over my head" technical responses, and the Generic Help function being too generic and vague, I have two simple questions I'm sure have been answered before:

1. When the default view is selected to be filtered by Genre, why does it default to Genre -> Album -> Artist, instead of the more logical Genre -> Artist -> Album? I feel stupid having to ask this, as there are plenty of posts associated with "node" displays, but I can't seem to wrap my brain around it yet.

2. In said default view, why don't the displayed (chosen) Columns retain their physical spacing (upon MM restart) when I manually slide them where I want them? They're fine for the session, but next time they all "bunch" together. Am I missing something?

Forgive my ignorance. Thanks.

That sounds like the Monkey is not closing down properly.
Check Task Manager after shut down and see if the Monkey is still listed.

Regarding point one just click the column you want to sort by (Genre) then hold down control and click any column to sort by whatever you would like to next. So, for your example above:

1. Click Genre column header
2. Hold down 'Ctrl' key, click Artist column header
3. Hold down 'Ctrl' key, click Album column header

Regarding point 2: Those settings should be saved upon closing MM. As drjboulder suggested, this is indicative that MM is not closing down fully or properly. This is usually as a result of scripts, plugins, or addons to MM. Do you have any installed? You can check if MM is shutting down correctly by checking the Processes tab of the task manager (access with Ctrl+Alt+Delete) for MediaMonkey.exe.

And for 1: Probably "Genre -> Album -> Artist" because that works for multi-artist albums. Sorting like "Genre -> Artist -> Album" would show all album tracks separately for multi-artist albums. Or it could be something else.

As mentioned in the previous posts, you can easily change the sorting, and these changes should normally be retained in a next session.
Extensions: ExternalTools, ExtractFields, SongPreviewer, LinkedTracks, CleanImport, and some other scripts (Need Help with Addons > List of All Scripts).
