Running same library on 2 computers - Best strategy
Basically my music library sits on my desktop and my laptop. Whenever an update is made to a computer, using Synctoy plus & portable drive, I will update the other computer.
Same paths & drive letters for both libraries
Quite automated as for the file sync side, not automated at all as for MM settings; need to remember exactly what changes are made and replicate on the other computer (stressful and boring).
Anyone running the same scenario? Suggestions? Maybe running MM "on a stick" (USB)?

If you'd do a Portable Install on both it will probably work to sync all (MediaMonkey install, DB, ini, media files). However you may run into the driveID issue (you could set both hdd's to the same driveID to circumvent the issue).

Do you personally use this approach?Lowlander wrote:If you'd do a Portable Install on both it will probably work to sync all (MediaMonkey install, DB, ini, media files). However you may run into the driveID issue (you could set both hdd's to the same driveID to circumvent the issue).

No, I have one central MM where I manage files and mostly play files through DLNA clients.

How can I verify this?Lowlander wrote:However you may run into the driveID issue.

When the tracks won't play on the PC where you copied the database, and the drive letter is missing from the file paths for files in the DB, then it's the drive ID issue.Blutarsky wrote:How can I verify this?Lowlander wrote:However you may run into the driveID issue.

So there's no point trying, if it is a well-known issue...nohitter151 wrote: When the tracks won't play on the PC where you copied the database, and the drive letter is missing from the file paths for files in the DB, then it's the drive ID issue.

I'm not sure if it is an issue with the Portable Install. My guess would be that it is an issue due to the fact that the files are on a different drive.

I should try to create a portable install copying data from the existing one. Are all MM files into its folder?

If you were to manually change the drive's serial number (there are various tools out there that can do this) then it wouldn't be an issue.Blutarsky wrote:So there's no point trying, if it is a well-known issue...nohitter151 wrote: When the tracks won't play on the PC where you copied the database, and the drive letter is missing from the file paths for files in the DB, then it's the drive ID issue.

Yes all MM's files are within the install folder of the Portable install.
As I have and nohitter151 mentions driveID can be changed on the drive or you can use: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... w_computer

I don't like really the idea to change the drive ids....don't know if other programs/system features could suffer from this.... synctoy for example..

As far as I know Microsoft synctoy uses drive letter only.Blutarsky wrote:I don't like really the idea to change the drive ids....don't know if other programs/system features could suffer from this.... synctoy for example..
