add/rescan suddenly extremely slow

Post by MPG »

Hi,
Up until this past Monday, the rescan used to take between 7-15 minutes on my collection. Suddenly on Monday, it took over 30 hours to complete. Since the issue started, I've tried changing some of the scan settings with no luck. Instead of whipping through the collection, each song is taking up to a second to be processed. I am running MM 4.1.13.1801 on a Windows 10 Pro V.1511 box that has 16 GB of RAM. Collection is on a 2 TB local drive with 118 GB of open space. Primary disk as 675GB free on a 1 TB drive. The database has recently been maintained a couple of times to reduce some MM processing delays. When I maintained I select Rebuild Full-Text Searches and Optimize database (Complete).

Any suggestions?

How old is the drive?

Did you enable analyzing for duplicates?

Hi,
The drive is about 5 years old and appears to be fully functional. TBH, I think this would be a red herring as the drive is used for other services and there hasn't been any degradation in their functionality. I checked the drive. 3% fragmented. Otherwise, everything checks out so I don't believe it's the drive.

No, I do not have analyzing for duplicates selected. :)
The options I have selected are:
Infer File Properties from Filenames and Use Tags then inferred properties
Get Album Titles and Track Numbers from Tags Only
Scan File directories for Artwork
Update file info from Tags when rescanning files
Only for files with changed timestamp or size
Remove unavailable items
Generate thumbnails for videos.

I've also noticed that the continuous scan that I have set up isn't updating the database. Some songs that I have in a "to be processed" folder are not being picked up by MediaMonkey. This is what made me do a rescan in the first place. So I get the feeling that the Optimizing has somehow changed the database and MediaMonkey is now trying to update it.

I'm loath to do an uninstall and reinstall as I have a number of automated playlists, Magic Nodes, and installed utilities. Setting it back up is not something I look forward to. I'd also loose my played count which is really important to me.

Thanks,
MPG
edit: provided more information to assist in analysis.

It's always good to check things like that first; process of elimination. The evidence you present is convincing. Although, 5 years is around the minimum range of even a quality, well maintained drive (no need for distraction, just keep an eye on it  ).

Have you had "scan file directories for Artwork" and "generate thumbnails for videos" enabled since before the problem?

Um... maybe. But optimize should only put it back into proper working order not degrade it. Maybe the install has become corrupt.

The "to be processed folder" is a folder to be monitored and set to continuous? Do you sometimes make changes outside of MM without MM running?

If you have the key MM files backed up, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. You shouldn't loose settings, playlists, counts

Thanks for the reply!
Have you had "scan file directories for Artwork" and "generate thumbnails for videos" enabled since before the problem?
Yes, both were selected. For testing purposes, I unchecked and tried again....still extremely slow.
The "to be processed folder" is a folder to be monitored and set to continuous? Do you sometimes make changes outside of MM without MM running?
I will at times add files to the folder outside of MM. They are usually picked up by the continuous monitoring, however every once in awhile, I will have to run the Rescan so they are picked up. I don't usually worry about doing the rescan as it's typically done in minutes.....not days or even hours.
If you have the key MM files backed up, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. You shouldn't loose settings, playlists, counts
Not sure how I would keep the counts as the uninstall would remove the database. Making a copy of the db and then swapping it back in, I think would put me back to square one. I guess that's an option...just not one I'm overly excited to do.

Wonder if I should submit a ticket to the support team....

A debug log (step 4b) capturing this is probably a good way to go: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=69

If you can back up key files just before reinstalling you should be fine, but I would submit a ticket at this point.

Hi,
I ran debug, then started Mediamonkey, after loading I ran the rescan. There are a number of errors which I think are coming from explorer. Do I submit a ticket or should I install the debug version of MM?

Yeah, you need the debug version of MediaMonkey to get anything useful from DBGView.
