Why won't .m4a won't allow seeking?

When I'm playing .m4a files I can't skip ahead in the music. When I try to skip to 20mins in or something it just restarts from the beginning. Why is this?
I could convert all the files to .mp3 but it's a hassle and probably takes up more disc space.
I don't get this issue when I load the same files in VLC.

Hi,
I still have no issues, I downloaded several M4As and I can seek thru them without issues. I can even seek if played directly from podcast and not downloading it.
