MediaMonkey com elevator annoyance

I find the "MediaMonkey com elevator" annoyance way too annoying in Windows 10 and have decided, at least for now, to quit using MediaMonkey till this problem is fixed. I have read many issues on this problem but there doesn't appear to be a solution. No other mediaplayer does this. I am actually working on my Father-in-law's computer and decided to uninstall MediaMonkey, since he gets too nervous about this. I always encouraged people to use MM, until now. I will check on newer updates and hope it gets fixed.

COM Elevator Prompts are directly related to system Registry changes and some system resources that were changed before next MMW restart.

Please note that decision of showing that dialog is system choice when Windows decide taht MMW is accessing resource that is not allowed to be accessed by users permissions and require elevated admin access. That prompt should not be intrusive so much eg. only once or twice and after MMW setup its integration into system they should stop.

There are several causes:
1. Other apps changes associations and MM system assigned resources where MMW needs to access them again in order to fix them. Usually on reinstall or when some other app changes the parameters like file associations
2. Parts of MM settings and commonly accessed files are saved into protective folder so MM needs to get elevated access in order to rite to the resources. Common mistake here MM library is saved under Program files folder which is protected by UAC (Use Access Control)
3. MM is tarting in FTH (Fault Tolerant Heap) virtualization mode here any outside action like Media Keys handling require elevated access

You can test above cases if you install MM as portable (Select during install) to for example c:\MMTemp and see if it starts without prompt.

I don't know if it is a good idea but I by passed security and said to not notify me. Then I no longer get that elevator message but now I am wondering what I did. This must have been a setting in Windows 10 because now I don't see such a setting in MediaMonkey 4.

Yep, there is a user account control setting that you can use to set the level of risk you are allowing to pass without a notification. Turning it down may well eliminate the pop-up, but also increases your risk of other, unauthorized changes being made without your permission. Portable installs on external drives do not have this issue. I started seeing this when I decided to switch to a local install on my new laptop with only the music on my external drive. I was having too many problems with the portable install doing strange things, and am hoping that switching will reduce them.

This is more than an annoyance.

If malware is accidentally introduced into a MediaMonkey build, the UAC warning is intended to advise users that the app is asking for admin permissions -- which it should not require in normal operation.

I'm a gold user and I've tolerated this for years, but it's a real, though not urgent, problem.

Please address at your convenience. If I had to guess, the problem is using the registry for something transient that should be performed elsewhere in the app environment.

No, that doesn't help.
I DO NOT WANT to associate media files with Media Monkey and have unchecked all the association options under the OS integration section.
This is a real irritation with MM. I can't make out what it is doing. I'm running Windows 10 Pro.
The library is not saved to a protected directory, nor is the database.


Pavel - It doesn't only occur after installation. The message occurs every time I start MediaMonkey, on any of the four PCs I have it running on. I wouldn't mind if it prompted once or twice after installation. After that, it should stop pestering me about settings.
I'm also a Gold user and agree with Ray above. Why can't this message be removed.

I agree with everything iCaptnBob said. I am also a Gold user. The prompt comes up EVERY TIME I start MediaMonkey. I always decline the prompt, and it has no effect on functionality, so it clearly is not necessary. It's simply obnoxious!!

Before Windows 10, you could make it stop by unchecking a box telling it not to try to associate filetypes with MediaMonkey. In Windows 10, that checkbox no longer appears because (in typical Windows fashion) the entire file association process has been convoluted. When you click the "Associate file types with MediaMonkey..." button, instead of opening a dialogue where you can simply uncheck the box, Windows tells you to go to "Settings > Apps > Default Apps" to change default apps. It doesn't even take you there. Just tells you where to go. I'd love to tell Windows where to go. I already have Linux on most of my boxes. If MediaMonkey were available in Linux, I'd dump Windows altogether. But I digress....

Just because Windows, doesn't mean MM should follow suit. This has been a problem for years, and is why I too no longer recommend MediaMonkey to my friends. There's no excuse for not having fixed this long ago.

Hi,
Have you installed MM as normal application or as Portable?

If you installed MM as normal Application then Prompt you get is regarding Task Bar player (We call it Micro Player) that needs to be registered in Windows registry after MM install in order to be able enable it on right click on Taskbar -> Toolbars -> MediaMonkey Player To avoid this it is suggested to install MM in Portable Mode (Select it during installation) and you should not be prompted for UAC on start.
