I use GCStar, which is cross-platform and opensource. It allowed me to import my already pre-existing excel (97-2003, not sure of docx compatibility) DVD spreadsheet. There's a bunch of features such as recommending movies you haven't watched in awhile, etc. Like mediamonkey, you can look up movie info across several sources such as imdb, allmovie, etc.

its more xbmc related, but there are several free apps to catogorize/organize/download art/info for movies/tv shows that might be helpful to you, like ember, media companion, etc.
Registered at the forum to ask you this question - what other apps would you recommend? I have tried both that you mentioned but each has a problem that I don't like.

I have tried just about every product (free and otherwise) that I can find for dvd (film files and physical dvd/blu-ray discs) that I can find ... and mentioned here and although it is with a 'love - hate' relationship ... dvdProfiler is probably the best thing I have found. If you take a look at it and have any questions let me know.
