Best synch method for Nokias with dual mode connection

Post by Blutarsky »

Hi there I'm experimenting MM 3,2,0,1294.
I have currently 1000 tracks to sync with my Nokia N96, that it can be connected in two ways to the computer using a USB 2 cable:
- PC Suite mode (PSM)
- Mass storage mode (MSM)

When connecting the phone in MSM, browsing folders with the WIndows Explorer is very fast, so I had a first attempt to sync MM in this mode, but it hanged when a phone call interrupted the sync process. Music Player contents looked scrambled on the phone.

So I have re-initialized the phone memory and a 2nd go in PSM: it looks a bit slower but it works. Phone contents are correct.

Is there a well known best-mode to connect and sync a Nokia N96? Hints & tricks?

I have completed a full sync with my Nokia N96 connected via USB & PC Suite mode. Once completed the music library on the phone was corrupted, showing all the tracks as "Unknown".

Is there a way to use MM to synch a Nokia N96 correctly?

There are some other threads about Nokia devices already, it seems to indicate that the device firmware is buggy and for some reason won't detect mp3 tags. See what a forum search turns up.

I had another attempt, this time using mass storage memory mode.
Synchs everything, but I nedd to force the phone to rebuild music library once done, everything fine.
I only miss correct playlist sync, now....

For my 5800 V.40 the problem is that MM doesn't actually sync. It simply copies all files, present or not. That's not the point of syncing. Winamp syncs the 5800 just fine. Winamp has other issues so that's why I'm trying MM but right now it doesn't look like a good option either. Not copying files that are already present is a rather basic bit of functionality.

MM takes a long time to list the folders (minutes) while Nokia Ovi player starts immediately.
Obviuosly Nokia knows how to do this, but apart from this, it's crap.

No comments from MM's author?

That functionality is already present, you just have to do it with the correct set up. Use the "Auto-syncronize" option instead of the "sync-selected" option. If you manually sync tracks in MM, then you expect all of the selected tracks to be copied to the device regardless of whether they are on there or not. MM only keeps track of the files on the device when you use "auto-syncronize".

That's just an inherent problem with the MM device plugin (d_WMDM.dll) - it will be improved in MediaMonkey 4.0.

Great news! Two last questions:

1) Is there a way to make playlist work on a Nseries phone, like my N96? Unfortunately exported playlists hold absolute paths to tracks on the hard disk.....

2) Any rumor on MM 4 scheduled release?

1. I don't know what kind of playlist format the device needs, but there will be additional playlist options (i.e. force relative path, etc.) as of MM4 for portable devices.

2. An alpha release will probably be available in 1-2 months
