Turning off MediaMonkey autostart when device connected.

Post by EJM-1 »

Various iPhones, iPods, other phones, not to mention Creative devices, get connected to my desktop. Is there an option for preventing MediaMonkey from auto-starting when a device is connected, because I can't for the life of me find anything in the menus? :(

Sounds like you have MM set as the autoplay action for these devices. Assuming you're running Windows Vista or later, click the start menu and type 'autoplay', or go to Control Panel and Autoplay to get to the settings. In there you can change the action that is taken when the devices are connected.

I'm on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I checked the autoplay settings, and MM was the default, so I changed it "ask me every time". This didn't make any difference, and both iTunes and MM started soon after I connected my iPhone, as they both did before the change. I had MM uninstalled for a few weeks because of this, because it was so annoying. I don't have any music on my iphone, so there's nothing for MM to do :p

It's unusual that two programmes would launch when a single device is connected. You can diagnose this a little further by unchecking 'Use AutoPlay for all media and devices' in the autoplay settings. Also restart your computer to make sure the setting is applied. This will disable autoplay completely so if that stops MM and iTunes from launching then we at least know that autoplay is the cause, but if they still launch then it would suggest that some other software is monitoring your connected devices.

Thanks for your assistance. I turned Autoplay off for everything, and although it didn't stop iTunes automatically starting, it did stop MM.

Before I turned off autoplay, I noticed that the "ask me each time" setting that I saved yesterday re the iphone, had somehow been switched back to open with MM. MM obviously managed to override the saved setting.

MM can set itself as the autoplay action for CDs and DVDs, but I don't think it does for portable devices. It also needs to be running as administrator to set any autoplay action.

As for iTunes, it has a service always running in the background to detect connected devices. I found the instructions to stop it running on connection here.
  • Connect the iPhone, iPad, iPod device to the computer
  • Inside iTunes, click on the device and then click on the ‘Summary’ tab
  • Scroll to the bottom of the Summary tab selections until you see “Options”
  • Click on the checkbox next to ‘Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected’ – wording will be slightly different if your device is an iPad or iPod or whatever
  • Close iTunes

It looks like I've solved the problem by going into MM options and device sync. I un-ticked the "scan when device connected" for my iPhone, and MM doesn't start when I plug in the iPhone. I've left the autoplay setting to "ask me everytime", which again doesn't prevent iTunes from starting up automatically when the iPhone's connected.

Thanks guys, for leading me in the right direction :D

1 Start by clicking on the Windows Start Menu.

2 Now, type “Autoplay” in the search box then hit your Enter key.

3 Scroll down through the list until you find your iPod name.

4 Click on the drop-down box and select “Take No Action” option.

5 Click the Save button and you should be good to go. No more annoying popups!

Thank me later :)
