Reference for creating a sync plugin

I am interested in creating custom sync behavior. I could write it as a stand-alone script, but I thought it would be nicer written as an auto-sync plugin. I haven't been able to find any such example or documentation. Does any exist?

I'm aware of that plugin, but I haven't been able to find any source code.

Is there any documentation describing how to create a sync plugin, or source code of an existing sync plugin I can use as a reference?
