ogg-vorbis wont play from virtual hard disks

Post by damasta »

hi!

I am new to win RT, but loving it already! :-)

media monkey has turned out to be my favorite music player - easy to use, plays all formats.

I just expanded my surface with a 64GB sd card. I chose to use the "virtual hard disk" (VHDX) method to make the sdcard available to my libraries. so far with very good results.

BUT: mediamonkey wont play ogg-vorbis files from that virtual hard disk. the odd thing is: MP3 does!?!? that is a shame, since most of my music library is in vorbis format...
even odder: I can browse to my music using the library (all tracks show up as they should), or even using the "open file" function. MM seems to read the tags fine (i.e. when I call up properties), but just will not play vorbis files. if I move the same files out of the VHDX container directly on to sdcard, they play fine.

all other media works perfectly from within the virtual disk: video, photos, mp3, documents,....just not vorbis.

any suggestions what I can to fix that? or is that a bug?

thanks very much in advance,
dom

This article shows exactly what I did:

http://say.hzj-jie.net/view?k=how+to+mo ... surface-rt

My only difference is that I am using a VHDX container instead of a VHD container, since VHDX containers (especially dynamically expanding ones) are more resilient against data corruption.

While the setup is a bit too complicated for "ordinary" users, me as a "windows power user" (sorry, no arrogance intended!) found that approach simple and straight forward. And the results are exactly what you'd expect: my libraries are now on my sdcard and are fully managed by all metro-apps.

But isn't it odd that mp3 will play while ogg vorbis will not? I use VDHX virtual disk containers all the time, since I am a hyper-v trainer. And I can't see any technical reason why one music file should behave differently than another while being streamed from such a VHDX container...

Anyhow: any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

vorbis files will play fine from ANY location (including CIFS Shares) - EXCEPT from the virtual disk.

Ping!

Any progress yet?

Can I help with anything else to get this fixed?

The problem still persists, despite re-installs etc.

Thanks everyone!

this has been fixed in Windows 8.1 RT.

it does not require any work-arounds anymore in order to include the SD-Card in libraries.

with 8.1 RT, I can include the SD-Card directly in to the libraries, have it indexed properly and playback all files and types from it.
