Record and Release Date field help/suggestion

Post by noisebeam »

I have tagged my music files (mp3) with the recording date and the release date in this format:
YYYYMMDD.

This format allows them to be sorted chronologically. (If I don't know the month I use '13' and if I don't know the day I use '40')

Since I want my tags to be saved as part of the mp3 file I don't use MM custom tags which are only saved to database.

So I use the 'Lyricist' field for recording date and 'Conductor' field for release date.

Any suggestions?
What alternate fields can I use since using Lyricist and Conductor overlap other legitimate uses?

I didn't see custom tags available in other formats beyond what is in ID3v2.

If I stick to ID3v2 tags, are there recommended ones to use vs. what I did use?

MP3 (ID3v2) OGG / FLAC WMA AAC (M4A, M4P) MPC (APEv2 ‡) APE (APEv2 ‡) are shown to support it in the tags of the files.

I use one of the custom fields for the release date. I have only MP3 and FLAC files, and in both of them the custom tags are stored to the file fine.

The format I use is YYYY-MM-DD with '00' for unknown months and days.
