Try Tools | Options | CD/DVD devices -> Uncheck "Read CD text"

Any difference?

No - still the same thing happens. The whole system freezes up, the only thing that restarts it is holding down the power button.

i've been getting lock ups just today and last night.
but not with the cdrom drive. its been when i use the float player or the micro player while
doing other stuff on the system or while surfing online.?

it is acting like the ram and cpu cycles here are getting ate up. and i know they are when i check
the process cpu cycles when using the two players, just to see what they cycles are.
and they are always higher then when i use the main player and theme..

i'm wondering if tab browsing code in the windows shell has anything to do with this high cpu cycles.
and high ram hogging. ? as my tab browser does not work proper with the tabs. i use IE 8. but the tabs started in ie 7. and so did the high ram and cpu cycles.

now that does not seem like it would do anything to the cdrom drive. but the cycles would be needing to be used by the cdrom drive too and if there are not any wouldn't it also crash the cdrom drive?
i'm using xp pro sp3. but do any of you notice the same high ram and high cpu cycles on vista?

yes its a bit far out of the way but coming at the error straight on is seeming to get no place.

start monkey.

right click on the taskbar to get context menu then click on task manager.

then pick the third tab to see what the power use is at for the cpu,

then switch to the mini player or to the micro player while the task manager is still on the screen.
and watch the cpu cycles move they will get higher when changing the player so wait for a few seconds
till that settles down and then watch the song that plays when it changes to the next one you should
see it get higher in cpu cycles also. then switch back to the main player and then to the other player you didnt
switch to first.

i get any place from 30 % cpu cycles on the main player then the other two go to 40% and 90% and some times stay at 98% usage. not sure why that does that but it has to be taken care of i've not been able to tweak it out of here in the new mm 3.1
and its gotten worse now then it was in mm 3.0.0

I'd unchecked read cd text a long time ago... no joy there.

so far for me the only time any troubles happen is when i insert something into the dvd drive...

i can't even check cpu usage as it all locks and freezes...

I have this same problem with a thinkpad t500. Don't have issue with any other program. I was told something about how it was an OS problem, but Itunes and other things that accessed the CD worked fine.

Vista or XP both had the same issue. Ended up having to switch bios from ACHI mode to Compatibility mode. Fixed everything.

Best of luck to you if you cant find a bios switch. They did say win7 looks good and may fix it

with my way of thinking you are confirming what i have thought for years. when m$ is bringing out a new OS. they muck up the old ones just so you have to buy the new ones. some body needs to put MS in Compat mode. :-?

Hi all -

When I change this BIOS setting, it then causes my computer to not be able to start up. Anyone know what's up with that?

windows 7 does not fix this problem.

I upgraded from vista ultimate x64 back around the first of this month, to windows 7 pro x64. in vista, everything was perfect. I could insert cds, play/rip them using mediamonkey, all that wonderful stuff. with ahci enabled, no less. but in windows 7, mediamonkey locks up whenever a CD is inserted. oddly enough, the last song I had playing keeps going fine, without issue. if I try and kill mediamonkey through task manager, the window may disappear, but the .exe never closes. additionally, no program on the computer can use the cd drive properly after it happens, some programs refuse to even launch, and I have to restart before I can use it again. incredibly annoying, especially since sometimes I forget mm is running before inserting a cd. even more oddly though, putting in a blank cd works fine. hell, I can even burn blank cds in mm. just not insert any already-written-to cds.

if I switch from ahci to compatibility, I'll have to do a ton of troubleshooting to get windows 7 switched properly, and lose some performance potential. this is a serious bug that affects only mediamonkey and should be fixed in the program, not by telling users to switch their bios settings. considering itunes and windows media player both work fine with cds, it's definitely an mm problem.

go to the beta room and get the newest beta version of mediamonkey it should fix it if the cd drive is messed up or if you have the old quicktime file in the old monkey. :)

Unchecking "Read text" worked in my case. No more lock-up. (That really sucked, btw.)

Well, it mostly worked. I have encountered this same condition (complete freeze of entire system; accepts no input; no response; requires hard shut--down by holding in the power button) while ripping two CDs at the same time. This actually worked for three CDs and MM obediently shows two ripping progress bars. But when I went to insert the fourth CD in the series, it all froze again.
