MM 3.0 - logo and splash screen refinement
Hello, didn't post this in the other logo thread because I'm not suggesting a new one.. just suggesting some refinements..
here's the current and my suggested new:
I've removed all the surplus black space - programs generally have a splash that size, but if you're not gonna use the space and it's not aiding the design.. it's not needed... it actually looks alot more dynamic in the slimmer version too... and kind of resembles a portable player. And it's an original shape...
(looking at it now, it might be slightly too slim)
I also fixed the monkey's right arm (our right).. as it was wierdly bent..
whoever's working on the artwork, please take this on board as constructive criticism.
Dale.

I agree that it should be somewhat less wide, but just by a few pixels. IMO the splash screen is the first introduction to the program and actually should resemble the aspect ratio of the first given window of the program, which in fact is more horisontally than vertically. I agree that you could move the edges 20-30px closer to the center (10-15px on each side), but I don't think it should be so small like you're suggesting.
Best regards,
Morten

hey, thanks for the feedback.
I agree that I may have it a bit 'too' slim... however, I disagree with your point regarding aspect ratio of the main program...
Every program, when maximised is wider than it is tall and almost every program can be resized with different aspect ratios when not maximized.. hell, the MM player can even be positioned as a vertical panel.
So I don't think that is really relevant as an identifier for individual programs.
However, maybe you simply feel that a predominantly vertical splash goes against general expectation and therefore defines itself somewhat separate to the program window rather than being tied to it.
I agree that this would be the case here.. but not because of the aspect primarily, but because the splash screen bares no resemblance to the default skin.
personally, I can't escape the feeling that the wide splash screen gives an implication of bloated software whereas the slim one implies streamlined and polished.

you're right.. my slim one does look pretty cramped in that sense..
what do you think of the square one above??
The second one can definitely do with some space around the text and logo elements... but The original one has way too much - to the point where the space becomes the focus.
I don't think keeping a horizontal format but making it a bit slimmer would work well because it would move further away from being dynamic like a widescreen and more towards the blandness of a 4x3 TV...
That's why my last one was even further (square -which I think works well)... it's unusual and bold in its shape.

sure.. I made a png for you...
you just need to put the folder in the zip in your MM directory..

however, it seems to not work with the transparency!

The square splash screen is definitively the best.
As you mentioned, the slim one is just not what the user expects. I like the idea of resembling a portable player, though it would have to be more refined so it's better recognizable by the 'ordinary' user.
I also think that the splash screen should have the same look and fell as the default skin which is not the case right now. It would be better to have that greyish background that glided has.
Also, the "Version 3" is too small. On a high resolution display it's barely noticeable.
So let's hope the current version of the splash screen is not the final one!

I was just playing with the MM logo a bit.
This could be handy for a Ferrari-style MM skin:

I really do not like that red color but it still looks cute.

I forgot something: ..., and even if it means red I would like to have ferarri (also they are so good in yellow).
