Just wanted to say . . .
darn it I didn't check the site before I upgraded to OS4 > shame on me (it IS on the front page) ;)
iTunes = the perpetual comercial that DOES NOT aid me in true library organization > shame on Apple

= Me patiently waiting for an update, because MM just WORKS!@! iTunes does not.

ITunes is organized like a casino with random things placed in your way to get you to spend your money, NOT to get where you are going!

As many others I look forward to when I once again can use MM to transeferre music to my iPhone with iOS4. In the mean time I'm using foobar2000 with the foo_dop iPod manager component. It works with an iPhone 3Gs with iOS 4. It's not anywhere near as good as the way MM handles syncing, but it does allow you to transferre music to a device with iOS 4. So, it'll have to do until MM is updated.

Speaking as an IT lead in a major company, I would be fired by now if I had trouble tickets open for this long on issues of this size.

"this size" is subjective. I'm sure that if the MM devs had "Make sure all of ClayM's issues are handled first, because as an Apple iPhone user he's obviously the most important person in the world" as a selectable priority in their bug-handling software, then the fix would be out for you by now.

Well, luckily they are not MY trouble tickets. My team's tickets get closed in a timelier fashion... :D

To wargazm's point, there are problems, and then again there are Problems. You don't know unless you are privy to the source and the dev environment what kind of changes need to be made to support this, and also do it in such a fashion that regression testing doesn't break anything else... etc.

Frankly, it's pointless for me to speculate. I just keep checking in to see if a beta build is ready. I don't even normally download beta versions, but anything to avoid using iTunes. :)

Besides, this gives me a chance to take a deeper dive into some MM features that I haven't much paid attention to.

go back a page: http://mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 31#p262331

also, don't you think a front page news item for every bug / feature request would get a bit boring? you could always look here: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view_all_bug_page.php [TIP: press CTRL + D (or CMD + D for Mac) will save that page as a bookmark/favourite. you could also set it as your home page so you can see all teh bugs when you go online ]

I have to say i am very disappointed in the efforts of MM in getting the IOS4 Fix done.
Let's be honest, the beta version of this was available months again and the final has been out for nearly a month now. So you guys have had at least 4 months to repair for the release.

If it was a priority then it would have been given the appropriate resources and the job would be done. Every time there is a new major firmware i am forced to resort to Itunes. This was one of the main reasons why i purchased this software was so that i didn't have to use itunes.

The same thing happened the last time there was a major update, we had to wait ages before we could use MM again with the iphone.

Comon MM get your act together and if you are happy to take our money then you should ensure that your product stays up to date with the evolving tech world.

rusty wrote:Guys,

Everytime Apple has a major new iTunes/firmware release we go through this: Apple releases the new firmware --> MM synchronization breaks --> MM home page is updated with a warning --> Users on the forum are understandably upset --> MM beta cycle starts and the complaints die out and we resume the cycle with Apple's next release.

So why do we continue to spend time on iPhone/iPod synchronization? Because you, our customers, generally want it--even if we do take a bit longer to deliver it.

Why are sync-related updates not released in a more timely fashion? Because figuring out intentionally obfuscated synchronization mechanisms takes time.

Why can't we have it ready sooner based on beta versions of Apple firmware? Because we don't subscribe to the Apple Developer Connection because of the additional restrictions it imposes on its developers (see: http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/ADC_terms.html ).

Can we be more upfront about the limitations regarding Apple device synchronization? I think there's always room for improvement, but we're pretty upfront about any sync limitations. With a News entry directly on the home page and a link to the device compatibility list in the description of Sync functionality, there have not been many new users purchasing MM for use with iOS 4.

I hope this gives a bit of perspective and thank you for your patience.

-Rusty

p.s. we have internal MM builds that are syncing to an iPhone 3G with iOS 4, so hopefully the beta cycle will be able to start soon. Also, we plan on adding synchronization for the iPad at the same time.
Rusty, a suggestion, if it's feasible.

It seems that part of the problem is that often new firmware is released (or new devices) that still appear to MM to be supported. However changes cause sync to break, sometimes in disastrous ways. Is it possible to maintain an internal supported device list that MM can check against so that if a new device/firmware ID is released then MM will refuse to sync? This would at least prevent sync issues from occuring. Alternately MM could maybe still allow the sync but popup a warning, and disclaimer, that syncing to the device is unsupported and is done at the users own risk.

Now personally I hardly ever use MM to sync due to problems in the past with new firmware and the like, but I'd like to get back to the point where I feel comfortable doing so. Something like this check would do that for me. Of course you may have added this and I don't know it since I don't use MM to sync atm :D

A foobar2000 plug-in named foo_dop had iOS4 compatibility last week. Not the iPhone4 hardware, but iOS4 on other devices:

Maybe MM will catch up soon? I really am not a fan of foobar2000.

yes, exactly. BETA VERSIONS. these are NOT the final versions! I used the beta versions 1 through to 5 (GM) and stuff changed on each one (as you'd expect!) - why should the MM team waste time getting MM to work with beta 1 only for it to be broken again on beta 2 etc? you DON'T do hacks like this on beta software, only once the final version is released.

iOS4 was released to public on 21st june, 3 weeks and 1 day ago - they certainly haven't had 4 months as you suggest! 'Rusty' has stated that they have MM syncing with iPhone 3G on iOS4 - this was a few days ago. so if 2 1/2 weeks is too slow for you then feel free to reverse engineer apple's iOS4 software yourself and pass the work onto the dev's.
Saber007 wrote:If it was a priority then it would have been given the appropriate resources and the job would be done.
it has been. if you look in the bug list the iOS4 issue is marked as 'critical'. there are other critical issues too, but as they don't affect you directly i guess they're not as critical are they... (that was sarcasm by the way).

ok, so, from experience didn't you once think "actually, as i rely on MM so much to sync my iphone/ipod i'm gonna hold back updating to iOS4 until the dev's have got it sorted"? cos I did. and i weighed it up: do i want the new features that iOS4 offers? or do I want ot be able to sync my music? for me it was easy - new features. i hardly use my iphones for music anyway as i have an 80gb 5th gen ipod video that takes care of the music side of things. my iphones are for phoning, texting, emailing and apps - music is an added bonus for if i forget a cd for the car, or can't be bothered taking my ipod AND iphone on the walk to the pub...

can't you see that they are? they are working hard on this issue which, if you think about it, they probably don't need to. you see us iphone owners that use MM for syncing are probably a minority in terms of total MM users - so why should they do this just for you and me?

MM already does this with iPhones and Touches.

It really pisses me off to see people complain about MM before they read into the facts.

1) MM do offer a refund within 30 days so go there if you want
2) Before you buy anything, check compatibily first - iOS4 has been mentioned for a while on this site
3) Did you speak with support before you sounded like a spoiled child on the forums?
4) When you buy an iPhone - the spefications advertised by APPLE is iTunes
5) MM offers a free trial so you had the oppatunity to find out before you parted with your money

That said, I can fully understand why you're annoyed - I can't use MM until this is fixed but you know what,.. this has happened before, they fixed it - it's happening again, they'll fix it.

If you decide to move from MM, it's your loss - You won't find a better music manager anywhere else.
