That option really should be implemented on MMW regardless of the player. Ideally, each known player connecting to the UPnP server should have the option to enable server-side scrobbling, defaulting to OFF.

Scrobbling to Last.fm from some other UPnP server

Post by Barry4679 »

I mostly use MMA to play music coming from MMW UPnP server.

When my PC is powered down I could still use MMA, as I can fall back to the UPnP server which is part of my Readynas NAS. Not as good as it doesn't have my nifty MM indices, but otherwise it is OK.

The problem with MMA though, is that it doesn't scrobble on its own. ie. it sends play counts back to MMW, which then scrobbles play counts to Last.fm.

So if I am listening to another UPnP server I get no scrobbling. ... Correct?

BubbleUPnP has the option to scrobble by either the Official LFM app, a third party one, or Scrobble Droid.

Scrobbling is important to me. Most of my plays are via my Sonos, which scrobbles to Last.fm, but not to MediaMonkey obviously. So I see Last.fm as my master play count repository, and obtain those to overwrite the MediaMonkey play counts. That way I can use MediaMonkey indices to identify which of my albums have fallen out of circulation.

It would be good if MMA had some way of scrobbling when listening to some source other than MMW ... Is this currently possible?

Thanks. I see I should have looked first.

I will add my voice to the thread referenced in the Mantis entry.

That would mean no scrobbling when using MMA to play from a UPnP server other than MMW.

Sometimes I want to listen to MMA when my PC is powered off. In that case I can use the less good, but still functional UPnP server which runs on my NAS. I would still like these plays to be scrobbled, so I am forced to use something other than MMA at these times.

+1 for extended scrobbling support from MMA

Also while scrobbling doesn't need to wait until track finish, it shouldn't happen at track start either. It is not too hard to accidently start a play when looking at the Now Playing list. LFM has rules about when scrobbling should occur.

From Last.fm's scrobbling specification:
"A track should only be scrobbled when the following conditions have been met:
The track must be longer than 30 seconds.
And the track has been played for at least half its duration, or for 4 minutes (whichever occurs earlier.)"

all they need to do is make MMA appear as a listed player in android, any one of the large number of scrobblers out there would then scrobble using the last.fm recommended logic, regardless of MMA playing local content or streamed. It needs nothing more than that. The change that needs to be made is tiny, yet it's still not been done  . REALLY annoying.

Note that we plan to add support for some Android scrobblers in MMA soon.

Today's update has this W00t.

I've never used a scrobbler on Android other than the last.fm app. Is there a good reason to try one of the other options?
The last.fm one did the job, didn't open any windows, didn't even put an icon in the status bar.

This does not scrobble tracks over UPnP. If MMW is your server, it will scrobble, as before; but serving from my NAS, I need to use cog_scrobbler.

In my experience, ScrobbleDroid has generally been more reliable than the official Last.fm app. IIRC, Last.fm was killing my battery if it tried to post scrobbles at times when I had a weak data signal, and it was refusing to scrobble podcasts. There have been updates to the Last.fm app since I last used it though, so their issues may have since been resolved. I haven't had reason to go back and check.

I just tried the Scrobble Droid option, and it seems to be working for me. Thanks for including that!

I don't see scrobbling either when playing via UPnP from a source other than mmw either.

All my credentials on the tablet are ok, ie. it now scrobbles ok when playing from music on the tablet when the MMW is not running.

I get scrobbling when playing via UPnP from MMW, but it is MMW which does the scrobbling, ie. I have MMA set to scrobble via Simple Last.fm ... the scrobble occurs but Simple Last.fm status screen is unaware that the scrobble occurred.

I have tried each of the three scrobbling agents for which mma has scrobbling options.

I have one other comment about MMA scrobbling support. Shouldn't the choice of Last.fm scrobbling mechanism be a toggle? ie. Why would I want multiple agents to scrobble my plays? Would that result in duplicated scrobbles?

What does MMA do if I check multiple agents? Does it try each in turn until it finds one operational, and cease when the scrobble has been achieved?

Presumably the answer is Yes, but it is not foolproof. I did notice one duplicated scrobble when playing a track stored on the tablet. It was triggered by having both Use Last.fm & Use Simple Last.fm checked in mma, and the Last.fm app had its SLS Support option checked.

Update:
MMW 4.1.0.1630
MMA: 1.0.4.0121
