Cannot change or delete meta data

Post by Pineapple-Monkey »

I deleted meta data, e.g. artist names, for multiple albums. I also tried overwriting the meta data with new info.
However, after re scanning my library, the old meta data is reapplied.

This only applies to a few albums. The file type is FLAC, mp3 and m4a. Are there files where you cannot change meta data? Is there a trick to get around this?

Thank you!

MediaMonkey (Windows User) may have no permission to edit the files from Windows. Files could also have corrupted headers causing problems.

You could use Tools > Advanced Tag Management > Clear ID3v1 & v2 Tags and then use Synchronize Tags. This does remove any embedded Artwork though.

I can also edit them. However, after re-scanning them into my library the edits disappear. Did you re-scann them into your library?

Yes change is persistent, also direct file check in hex editor show same result, MMW correctly update changes in file metadata tags.

I deleted my entire Media Monkey library.
Loaded the music files and edited their tags in the app AIMP.
Loaded the files (re-scanned my entire music library) back into Media Monkey and the problem is gone. The edits are now permanent in the files.

Hi Peke,

I found a solution for a strange MM issue we tried to solve and just wanted to let you know in case you come across this again with another user.

Approximately 3 months ago I raised this support request and we also had a Skype and remote technical support session with me here in Australia.
You probably have lots and lots of cases and cannot remember everything. This case could not be solved at the time even after we did a lot of testing.

Here is a brief summary:
I am using MS Win 10 Pro, which always comes with BitLocker a Microsoft hard drive encryption technology. I do not use special security software and MM Gold latest version.

The issue was that when my music library were saved in C:\Users\UserName\Music no metadata could be saved. E.g. I would change the rating/ rename songs etc; then re-scan the library, this always resulted in all changes being lost. We did test and made sure that the User folder had full admin rights, no folder had write/ edit restrictions, I have 100% full folder access/ edit/ write etc. The issue still persisted and we could only explain it to ourself that it may be related to Windows 10 Pro BitLocker.

However, yesterday I came across a solution. The reason for the problem is fairly simple. Its a Windows security setting that may also be present in Standard Windows OS (not only in Windows Pro).
It is basically when the Controlled folder access is turned on in Windows. Then users run into issues with not being able to save files from the web in their Download folder or any other folder. I turned this feature off and tested the metadata editing in MM (after moving test files into C:\Users\UserName\Music). Now the issue is solved. Somehow the controlled folder access feature blocked MM from permanently savings edits to music files. This might also be interesting for your developer team.
