Wifi sync only works occasionally

MMA: 1.3.3.0838 on Moto G4, running Android 7.0
MMW: 4.1.21.1875 on WIndows 10

I recently started using wifi sync and found it a lot quicker and easier than via USB, but it's only occasionally that the app on the phone can successfully connect with the library on the pc. The dialogue with "Connection Failed!" (or to that effect) appears. I try restarting the phone, exiting out of the pc program and then reconnecting, but often to no avail. Then without warning, often a few days later, it'll work perfectly. My setup is always the same, I only have one gateway in my house, that both the pc and phone are connected to. I have MMW open but inactive.

So that I can do some troubleshooting and hopefully identify why it doesn't always work, what are the parameters for a successful wifi sync?
