Ok - that seemed to work, there where a few 'unknowns' there after but on looking at them they were .m4a's which I thought were supported. Unselected it as a format and after syncing (and converting) they were there perfectly!

Tomorrow - I go for a full sync, so we'll see what happens. I'm going to put 'na' in the composer field of my collection, I'll do that tonight so it should be ready in the morning.

Unknown album also loses the track tag!

Hi all,
This has been driving me mad, I've been following it here, I think I have it solved. I've been able to sync in Media Transfer mode in WMP and have the playlists and files transfer OK, but not in MM and someone above mentioned the 'composer' field, so I did a few test syncs to see if that made any difference. What I seem to have found is that if the 'composer' or 'artist' fields are empty it gives an 'unknown' tag. But if they are filled in then it syncs fine with album art and all!

I'm about to wipe the music from my phone (again) and test this theory with a larger playlist! Whats interesting is that WMP can transfer files with blank 'composer' fields. So that makes this a MM bug right?

I'll post back this evening on this!

That just sucks. The new firmware doesn't even work right???

NO OTHER DEVICE of mine does this, NONE. Perhaps it IS a Nokia problem. And I'll just keep using Mass Storage then PC Suite mode. That's the only thing that has worked for me so far. Having to sync the same stuff twice just to get it to show up right,

No, I use .40 and just this morning blew away my tags after 'sync'ing a playlist to my 5800. You need to use PC Suite to transfer playlists and then re-connect in mass storage mode and delete the tags database it seems.

Has this problem been fixed with the new 4.0 firmware?

Hi,

on my 5800 most files don't show tags either. Since this also happens with files I ripped with Ovi Player (primitive app that is) I have to conclude that the music player in S60 is simply buggy. Rather ironic when you call a device Xpressmusic and don't deliver a top notch music experience. Marketing over engineering I suppose :)

Anyway, I don't think this is a MM issue. The files I'm having problems with were created with Streamripper, WinAMP, Media Player and Ovi.

Please do if you get a chance. I'd like to know if it's specific to my device and/or PC. If it turns out others with S60 devices and MM have this strange behavior as well, I'll submit a bug report. I don't like using one program to sync podcasts(MM) and another to sync music(WMP12) any more than I like syncing in PC Suite with Ovi and then changing to mass storage to sync with MM. I also don't like filling in obscure, rarely used tags so that it will work correctly. There's alot I like about MM and I'd like to see it get fixed, if it turns out to be a problem with MM.

Thanks for that suggestion, I may try that too!

I'm having this problem also with my N85. But I've found a strange behavior that I wanted to see if anyone else can replicate. For those having trouble with certain tracks showing up as unknown once they sync them via MTP take a look at the "composer" tag in the files that do not sync correctly. Are they empty? If they are (I suspect they will be) put something (anything) in that tag and try to sync the track again in MTP. Does it make a difference? For me it makes all the difference. Why? I have no idea. I can't even view the composer tag on my phone. But MM is the only software I have this issue with.

Can anyone make a walk-through for N97 and MM? it really beats me. once it goes like speeding bullet + "refresh Music Library" and everything is there, then it says that there is no space when there is enough spce for double-that, then it it just hangs there, then is just "erases-but not erases" the music and there are no more playlists.' then music is there but no playlists, then is just sitting there "untill-the-push-the-off-button" and so on.

does anyone figure it out, please.

I don't want to go to grave WITH this N97.

PS. I think it looks he will go alone...

I encountered the same problem and have found out the following:
1. Forget about syncing the N5800XM in MTP-Mode. In that mode I get a lot of "Unknown" tracks.
2. In mass storage mode I get the highest rate of correct tracks.

With the last sync there were five tracks left, that were not correctly displayed on my phone. All tracks were created using EAC with lame. I tempered with the tags (removed unnecessary stuff and "exotic" chars), but that did not do anything. So I converted the file to MP3 again with MM (CBR 192 kbps) and voila it was recognised correctly by the phone. At least I have a workaround so far...

I would suggest this is a very annoying bug in the Nokia music player. Try to send a message to Nokia.

I just thought of something. I wonder if it would be better to just take the card out of the phone, put it in an SD card adapter(if you can get one) and insert that into your card reader port for syncing with MM. You would bypass the 5800 entirely. Although I guess that's no guarantee the phone will read the tags correctly when it's inserted again. But what do you all think?

I know it's a PITA but I may try it.

As a user of the Napster On the Go Flatrate I need the MTP abilities, and with WMP everything is transferred correctly. But of course I would prefer the Monkey, because the Library and Tagging abilities are so much better.

If anybody has some advice how to handle this problem, please let me know.

As I mentioned, use Mass Storage mode first to sync. Refresh library. Anything that shows up with .mp3 in the title will not display the correct info. And also, any new playlists often DO NOT show up after a Mass Storage sync. But the songs do get added, another oddity. However, it seems you MUST sync under Mass Storage first for some reason. Otherwise you keep getting tag errors using other modes alone.

Go back under PC Suite mode to sync, remove these .mp3 songs and resync. Also make sure your PC Suite playlist sync list is exactly the same as the Mass Storage playlist sync list. The info on the tags should now be correct when the removed songs get added back on, and your playlists will show up. I think Media Transfer mode could also be used in place of PC Suite, but I use PC Suite mode since I got success with it. Sometimes you have to go through the steps more than once, which is frustrating because the 5800 is also very slow in syncing. But eventually your tags show up with the correct info.

The 5800 is weird, LOL! There was a new firmware release and I STILL had that problem.
