I see that there is one successful app which does provide this tooltip ... MM4
Thanks for pointing this out, I have overlooked this in MM4 ;-)
You mentioned Chrome ... I see that it has a long press on the back|forward button, which shows a list of available jump to points ... that's neat ... would be good for MM5 ...
OK, do you mean what is in MM5 available via right-click? In Chrome it seems both right-click and long press.

You didn't respond to this ... it would be good if the filter syntax was common across all nodes
ok

OK, I see that it a common keyboard shortcut ... learn something new every day ... thanks

IMO it would be better if the backbutton steps back one step at a time, not the large jumps that it can do at the moment. ... ie. each press of the back button takes me one step back ... closes the opening an inline window or removes the filter I set, etc etc
I understand that it might be unexpected for you, but this is how it works in other apps too, so I suppose that it is kind of expected.
e.g. opening inline album info in iTunes and pressing the back button also goes out from the album list (together with closing the detailed inline album info)
And there is not tooltip on the back button to show alt+left and the backspace keyboard short cuts or the forward button
Yes, there is no tooltip, but Alt+Left is a well known shortcut for this -- so also the other apps (WMP, Chrome) doesn't show 'Alt+Left' tooltip on these buttons.

You were looking at the inline-inline display for that album, but you were still in the "Composers" view (EntireLibrary>Composers on the navigation bar) so one step back is EntireLibrary>Artists as expected.
I understand what you are saying, but I do think that in order to "expect" all aspects of MM back navigation, you have to have to have read and understood the program source code. ... otherwise not everything is as expected IMO

ie. the back button action for these two screens is different https://www.dropbox.com/s/9r7gwfnz0lxtp ... n.png?dl=0

I know that you can explain why, but as a user it not intuitive IMO

Also it is probably not expected that the first lnline display records a breadcrumb for backbutton, but the 2nd inline display does not appear to
ie. click the album title in the 1st level of inline window (as shown here), and the backbutton will take you back to this inline display ... all good, all as expected
from here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ayhbf8ttkis61 ... e.png?dl=0

But if I am in the 2nd level of inline display, and do the same thing ... the back button takes me back to the upper level inline panel, not where I can from
https://www.dropbox.com/s/22rtm78d2rve3 ... e.png?dl=0

And it very UNexpected (IMO) that if I am at the position shown below (ie. I have selected a specific Composer, and you are showing their inline window) ... and I change the View from Grid to Albums&Tracks (or List) .. and you show me EntireLibrary>Composers(168) ... I would have expected something that looked more like EntireLibrary>Composers(1)>Bela Bartol
from here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wnc7gvk6c5xil ... d.png?dl=0
ie. like this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wgr8mivaicoo2 ... s.png?dl=0

And to cap it off, when I then get confused and use the backbutton, you send me off to somewhere surprising (eg. off to somewhere EntireLibrary>AlbumArtists, where I was yesterday, or hours ago)
--------
IMO it would be better if the backbutton steps back one step at a time, not the large jumps that it can do at the moment. ... ie. each press of the back button takes me one step back ... closes the opening an inline window or removes the filter I set, etc etc

I think that this would be easier to understand from a user perspective.

I suppose that MM5 is following MM4, but I never understood MM4 back navigation either.

--------
try this disorientation
the backbutton seems to interfer with the looking magnifying glass toggle action

EntireLibrary>Composer .... type something to filter to a composer ... ie. I type bela ... I go to EntireLibrary>Composers(1) ... which is good ... a click on the magnify glass (top right corner, not the one in the breadcrumbs) ... this unfilters the display, which is good

But if start the same way: ntireLibrary>Composer .... type something to filter to a composer ... ie. I type bela ... and go to EntireLibrary>Composers(1) as before .... and then use the back button, and get surprised by being taken to somewhere like EntireLibrary>AlbumArtists ... so I use tool bar forward button (or alt+right) ... and I am back ok ... but the magnify glass toggle is now broken ... ie. it takes me from EntireLibrary>Composers(1)>bela not to EntireLibary>Composers(168), but to EntireLibrary>Composers(1) ... and now I am locked into an invisible filter
--------------

filter syntax not working in Composer sub node ... I can filter with string "bela", but not "composer:bela", as I can in AllTracks

so if I filter to "bela" in EntireLibrary in Grid view, and then change view to Album&Tracks ... I also get Bela Flac (ie. the artist), so i then need to change filter string 'composer:bela' which was invalid in the Composer sub-node
-------------

And there is not tooltip on the back button to show alt+left and the backspace keyboard short cuts or the forward button

I think that it works as expected.
You were looking at the inline-inline display for that album, but you were still in the "Composers" view (EntireLibrary>Composers on the navigation bar) so one step back is EntireLibrary>Artists as expected.

BTW: 'Esc' is not the default shortcut for navigation back, the shortcut is 'Alt+Left'
'Esc' just closes the inline display of the composer/album item in the Composers grid

Open a node, and then select the Composer sub-node (in Grid-view)... click on a composer's thumb ... I see an inline list of his albums .... good

Now change the view from Grid to Album&Tracks (or List view) ... huh? ... you just trashed my selection ... I see albums for all Composers? ... but I just changed views, I didn't change nodes

Hit the back button on the tools bar ... double-huh? ... you have bounced me way back to the Composer Home screen ... ie. no list of composers (just artist and album thumbs), and you have lost my selection.

Or be in EntireLIbrary>Artists .... switch to EntireLibrary>Composers ... click on a composer image, and then one of the composer's albums ... so I am looking at the inline-inline display for that album ... then press the Toolbar back button ... and ... (surprise!) I am way back in the Artists node.

The tool bar back button should do what the Escape key is doing ... so that MM5 is consistent with what it does if I was EntireLibrary>Composers ... then clicked on a composer image, and then click on one of the album titles. taking me to the album screen ... here the back button takes me to where I expected to return to

It is all a bit like Alice In Wonderland:
Well, in our country,” said Alice, still panting a little, “you’d generally get to somewhere else — if you ran very fast for a long time, as we’ve been doing.”
“A slow sort of country!” said the Queen. “Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”
At the moment the workaround is to do everything twice ... ie. first press the Escape key ... and then, only where that didn't work, press the back button
