I stand corrected. I was thrown off by not having updated my library, so my Auto playlist wasn't changing...

Thanks

No, AutoPlaylists are Criteria based. These Criteria are executed on the Library each time you request that AutoPlaylist. This any changes in the Library are reflected on AutoPlaylists.

AutoPlaylists are collections of songs that are created dynamically based on a chosen set of criteria. As new Tracks are added to the Library or changed, AutoPlaylists adjust dynamically so that any new Tracks that match the chosen criteria are added, and others that no longer match the criteria are removed.

I think you completely misunderstand Autoplaylists. They are refreshed every time you open them and are not static in any way.

Having a function to re-apply an Auto Playlist's criteria

Right now Auto playlists let you build a sophisticated playlist based on a slew of criteria. Once done, you still have a "static" list.

But the real power of Auto playlists would be to re-run the playlist criteria "on demand", so that the playlist gets updated in the event you added new media that matches the playlist's criteria. Auto playlist, in other words, is currently a static, one time feature. How about providing the means to re-build the playlist by re-running the criteria from say, a context menu when right-clicking over the playlist, as well as from within the preferences menus???

How about having settings to each Autoplaylist, such as a switch enabling a re-build of the Auto-playlist whenever MM is launched?

How to create "smart" playlists???

by freedomfries323 » Tue May 09, 2017 5:16 pm

So there's a great feature called "auto Playlist" which allows one to build a playlist from criteria. I use it to build a playlist based on all the music files found within one file path (from a specific folder, that is to say).

It would be really awesome if that Auto playlist could re-run the criteria on demand, so that it can rebuild itself by using the same criteria. That way, if I were to append files to the underlying folder, I could update the playlist automatically, like a smart playlist...

Basically, I'd like to have such playlists update themselves when I add new music to the folders. If there is a way to do this, how can it be done? This is useful for DJ's who add music often to different folders (which act as bins/crates.) The playlist can then be exported as an m3u list, etc...

Thanks for any tips.

PappyK,

In the Basic tab:

List the genres in the Genre field by using semi-colons as dividers, eg

Bluegrass;Old Time;Hillbilly;Cajun

Or in the Advanced tab:

Click on <Add Search Criteria...>

In the Search Criteria dialog, set Property to Genre with Condition equals and then check the boxes in the Value section for the genres you want.

Yes I know that will work because I also do a BLUES show and all my music is in a smart playlist that updates itself as I add new music. However, with my bluegrass show I include music from several different genres ie: Bluegrass, Old Time, Hillbilly and Cajun. With iTunes I was able to set up a smart playlist that included all of these genres. I have found MM so much better for my programming with the exception of this one problem. But, I can work around it. It just makes me insure that any new music I load into the master data base that goes into the Grass Is Blue playlist must be manually added.

Just create a new AutoPlaylist (Edit > New AutoPlaylist), and set Genre to Bluegrass to accomplish the Playlist you mentioned.

OMG, well the info is obviously there. Looks as if the skill required to accomplish this is beyond this 77yo brain. I will just find a work around. Thanks for trying to help.

Autoplaylists (MM Gold) can do that.

[SOLVED] Smart Playlist

Hey Y'all,
Is there any way to create a smart playlist withing MM. Before I began using MM I used iTunes and was able to set up a playlist that would always update itself based upon certain rules; such as the playlist would contain all Bluegrass, etc. And any time I put a new album in if it met the criteria it would automatically be picked up in that playlist. As a radio presenter this is a very convenient thing.
