As per forum guidance I did do a quick search for this but didn't find my own post on the same topic from 2023, titled "Updated Playlist - Play Now uses Previous Sequence".
The symptoms described by me in that original post are very similar, but the subsequent discussion veered off into other Playing Now panel behaviour. Apologies for the duplicate thread.

[u]Setting: [/u]I have a [i]tab [/i]with a [i]static playlist[/i] showing in the [i]main file list[/i]. I send the playlist to the [i]Now Playing panel[/i] via the[i] sideways triangle[/i] at the right of the large font [i]playlist title[/i]. All songs are present in Now Playing and they play with no problems.
Next, I change the content of the playlist via selecting a song on a different tab (eg right hand search for artist: Yardbirds) and use right click[i] send to[/i] to add one or several songs to the playlist. I use the [i]playlist helper column[/i] that pops up after the send to relocate the new songs from the bottom of the helper list up to where I want them.
Next I change back to the tab that has the playlist shown in the main file list, which shows the edited version of the playlist with the new songs. All fine so far.

[u]Issue:[/u] When I use the sideways triangle next to the playlist title to send the edited playlist to the Now Playing window, [b]the original version of the playlist is sent again, not the edited version[/b]. I have the[i] Default 'Play now' action[/i] set to [i]Clear list & play selected only[/i], so the edited list should replace the original list, but it does not. Even if I use the three dots at top of the Now Playing list to clear the list contents before using the sideways triangle to send the playlist again, it is only the original Playlist that gets sent via the sideways triangle.

[u]Workaround:[/u] Clear the now playing list (just to be sure), then manually select the files in the playlist's file list (click on top file and shift click on bottom file) and then right click and Play Now. That sends the edited track list to Now Playing.

[u]Inference:[/u] Whatever the sideways arrow is pointing at is not being updated when the playlist is edited.

As mentioned above, manual moving files will auto-save the new order, it's seen as intent. Sorting on Columns isn't auto-saved, it isn't seen as intent, some just want to see the files in a certain order temporarily.

I was not asking how it presently works. Just that it puzzles me why this makes any sense to do it that way??

We shall see how it works after the fix posted to 2820 is released.

The program decides to save a sort change to my custom view (overwrite specified sort) without asking, but it does not automatically save a change to the sort order of my playlist??

Manually changing file order is always saved, thus no save button. Sorting in never saved, thus the save button.

So the point is, I have manually moved some files, how do I know it will be automatically saved when I exit the playlist?

Why not provide a save button for that also, so I can save when I want to?

Admittedly, a sort order or even a multi-column sort is fairly easy to re-do, but how do I know it will NOT be saved on exit?

When you manually order files the changes are always saved. Sorting allows you to sort for whatever purpose without having it saved automatically.

OK, so using build 2019 we have the "save order" button back in a playlist main window after sorting by column.

The issue of loading the previous order after manual re-order and clear now playing (after second time) is still there, apparently marked fixed in V2820.

Now I have some questions. Why do I get a save order button when I sort by column, but I do not get a save order button when I re-order playlist files manually??

I realize I can save my manual re-ordering by selecting some other playlist, and then back to the re-ordered one. But still why two different ways to save the order??? This method does not work for sort by column.

As you are using Portable Version as soon as MM crashes you should find "mediamonkey.el" or "MediaMonkey.elf" along with mediamonkey.exe or in Portable folder.

Just copy/move it somewhere else, ZIP and attach to support ticket. It is the same info MM send with each crash to us.

NOTE: It is recreated on each sync or appended if it i still existing.

Trying to get a debug log for you.
App throws a queue processing error then spends 7 minutes gathering data and sending it off.
Even typing into the 'what steps' box causes it to freeze again.
A real PITA. If I wasn't committed to helping you get this (minor) problem fixed it would not be worth my time.
After three more error traps and boxes I've now got a white screen of death and my only option is to restart and repeat the process. FFS!

Finallly got there after PC reboot and another 3 "what were you doing" dialogs. Have turned off file monitoring, hopefully that helps.

It is possible that the effect only kicks in for second relocations, i.e.:

[list]Using the triangle control at top of the playlist, invoke play now for the playlist. Clear the now playing panel and relocate a song in the playlist. Invoke play now for the playlist. Relocation [b]is [/b]reflected in the now playing sequence. [/list]
[list]Clear now playing again and do another relocation of a file within the playlist playlist. Invoke play now for the playlist, latest relocation [b]is not[/b] reflected in the now playing sequence. [/list]

As requested, please provide a [url=https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=86643]debug log[/url] so a developer can see why this doesn't work on your setup.

As stated above, manual re-ordering only saves AFTER/DURING the selection of a different playlist, and then re-selecting the original.

Until I do that, the manual playlist re-order is not saved.

Are you by chance running 2618, which we can't have yet???
