Hi,
First of all I would like to state that I understand both sides of view.

Both have good and bad sides, I have done extensive tests and documentation and inovative algorithm in https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=20704 that would revolutionize Shuffle and Random playback which have not have been tackled for 30+ Years and should give you as user total and full control. But it is Private till we decide how to approach as it will need lots of time and complete redesign of now playing.

If you play CD in Shuffle mode do you see shuffled order and does CD rearrange in that order. No. I played music like that for 30+ years. Also have you ever played with friends guess next song (and in some cases if you are further from played track you loose).

randomizing a list is (or should be) a separate function.
I agree and that is what I lobby as future behavior, we will see what MM 2027 will bring and we plan number of surprises.

You can always Use Auto-DJ and completely randomize playback. Let me know if you need example and also you can throw in a Party mode to spice things up.

I could never understand why anyone would want a now playing list which would not play in the displayed order.

If you really want that, you could just hide the now playing, and wait to see what you hear. :D

A big problem the old way was that you could not go back to relisten to a track as it would forget or not ever know what it had played after that.

Advantages of current system is that with or without shuffled order, you can manually adjust the list, insert a different track to play next or after some other track, etc.

All that said, I never knew why they could not have kept the old way and added the new way as an option for those of us who want to see what is next and previous.

More importantly in my mind, some of us have been requesting a way to save a few playing queues with the ability to resume where we left off, after playing from some other list for some other occasion.

I understand it is finally an item on the list for a future version, but it hasn't seen any activity in the buglist that I have noticed.

Can you please describe what you mean with:

Have to say, i disagree with this:

shuffle is a type of playback; you have a list in normal order, but play is shuffled.

randomizing a list is (or should be) a separate function.

Other odd issues with MM5 2024.2.0.3184 too -- some albums, it includes the playback gaps as duplicate tracks... very strange.

have reverted to 5.02.2531 portable and everything working as it should.

iirc that was only implemented for the Playing list (now you just click 'Shuffle' to achieve the same effect).

Adding this to Playilsts is on our todo list at: https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=16084
