I have the same problem... deleting the directory from the library is OK, but after a restart it comes back..

If i edit the artistname with slow double click on the artistname, the problem appears.
if i edit it with right click and select properties , it works fine after the edit..

Removed unused Attributes (Artist, Album, Composer, ...) is selected...
Albumartist is empty...

After i change the artist i have to delete the previous manualy...

When artist is "Rolling Stones" and i change it to "Rolling Stones, The" the old "Rolling Stones" stays in artist list.
