DebugView captures activity, so you don't need errors for it to be useful.

Do these files play in MediaMonkey (ie. they're not shown under Dead Links or Disconnected)?

Check Auto-Conversion/Support Formats settings. M4a may not be supported, thus must be converted, which may require codecs..

This is where the confusion stems from. MMA is not capable of remote control. You can stream from an DLNA Server, you can stream to a DLNA client, and you can do both at the same time. However you can't control MMW from MMA. So, we're not sure what you were doing before.

These are not typical experiences. Which Build (Help > About) are you using? Can you please provide further details on how Auto-DJ fails for you? Do you have Infer properties enabled? You do a full uninstall, remove all remaining MediaMonkey files, except the database file, then install the same way again.

Are other settings also lost after restart?

With the Portable you're not using the Windows Registry, so if both are suffering the same fate there is something else happening. Can you try a separate Portable Install and see if it still has the same issue?
