All my previous search results pointed to Tools > Options > Player for setting the default Double-click action, which was obviously not correct.

If any files are "problematic", then it is an issue with MM5, not MM4, which imports the same files flawlessly.
No log is generated by MM5 debug mode.

That is an accurate description. MM5 does cover the taskbar when in auto-hide mode.
If the taskbar is set to auto-hide (my normal setting), for any other app, moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen shows the taskbar.
When MM5 is the active window, that does not happen.

Disabling UAC made no difference. MM5 still camps out on top, hogging focus. No access to taskbar unless I Alt-Tab out of the program or press the Windows key.

Yes, it does generate a UAC confirmation prompt. I will temporarily disable that globally first, and if that works, I can configure Windows to skip the UAC just for MM5. Also, as I stated earlier, this occurs on both my desktop, and a second PC (an Asus laptop).

I would have attached screen shots of the installed add-ons but the "Insert Image" button simply inserts this - [img][/img]

Only the plethora of default add-ons that are part of the installer.
I don't recall ever intentionally using any of them.
