I think you should ditch the volume and request being able to mouse over the micro player and then use the mouse scroll wheel to change volume.

Then maybe you could have a numeric display of the volume.

When using my Multimedia keyboard to pause MM it will make it the active window.
There has been other reports of this happening on track change because of the pop-up.

In skinning %L means album so my guess is it is something to do with the album.
