Lyrics Side-by-Side vs. Overlay

What determines how lyrics are displayed - side-by-side vs overlaid on top of the artwork? It does not appear to be a player setting since my player displays it both ways. My preference is side-by-side because the overlaid style can be hard to read depending on the artwork.
