Have you collected more music then you wanted?

Post by Sebastian78 »

Here's what I just noticed, I have too much music on my computer that I never listen to and never intend to listen to. It started with the idea of "collecting" as much music as possible, so I would have a complete Beatles collection, complete Deep Purple, complete Pearl Jam etc. But I never listen to the Beatles and hardly Deep Purple.

The collection grew too large for me to get enjoyment from it. With over 160GB of music on my laptop, all VERY neatly ordered, it was a pain in the ass finding music to listen to.

Anybody have this "collectors mania" when it comes to your collection?

Like you, I have a fairly large collection, one that I've ripped from my own CDs. But what has really caused my collection to explode is the addition of podcasts to my library.

What I've taken to doing is to divide my entire collection into two libraries: Active and Inactive. My Active Library contains the tracks that I always want immediate access to, while the Inactive Library contains tracks that I want to be available, but I don't need to have immediately available (such as old podcasts that I wish to keep).

I haven't had a problem with quickly getting to the music that I want. What has been a big help is by adding useful tags to my tracks, and working with autoplaylists. For example, I renamed one of the custom tags "Music" and I used it to create an autoplaylist of just music tracks (genres [like "Comedy"] don't help in many cases because many contain both music and non-music tracks).

That's why I only use Auto-Playlists to play my music. They'll filter out what I don't want to listen to without me having to do the searching.

i just play it all day and most the night i hear them in my sleep if i don't i wake up cause the computer being win98 more likely crashed. 8) but i use playlists too, just not auto ones. well one for top of the charts is auto.
mine does get played but it takes an long time now to go through them all some were around a couple months to hear them all. and start over again. 8)

then again i did not keep songs i did not want. just to make a full collection of songs from the artist. only one i have all their songs is hank williams sr. 8)

This sums me up pretty well. I have around 1.5TB of FLAC/MP3, the majority of which I hardly listen to. I like the idea mentioned above about a split library - how can you get Mediamonkey to do this ?

As far as I know, having two libraries is not a feature available from MediaMonkey. What I do is maintain both libraries manually, moving the tracks I don't need from my active library to my inactive one via Windows Explorer. When I start MediaMonkey, I have it monitor (and autoorganize) only my active library. Returning a file or many files back into my active library is just a matter of moving the files back into my active library.

Also check out the Multiple Library Selector script when filter isn't sufficient.

In response to the original question, No!

I love hearing new music all the time and listening to different genres as well.
I have no trouble managing my library using MM features such as Auto DJ and playlists.

My favourite saying is, "it's not about the amount of music you have, it's all about the depth of the shuffle"

I've collected a lot more than I originally intended! MM makes it so easy to store and access that there's no reason to resist.

with so much music from different genres...

This forces me to use multiple music programs.

The reason behind this is the large amount of KROQ/80's pop , 70's disco ,flashbacks, cumbias collection have a lot of one hit wonders. i hate to look for them with all my neatly organized hiphop artists/albums (over 200 gb of hiphop). i can probaly use the genre tab to organize it but that is not worth it. So i use Itunes for the 80's music, media player for cumbias.....

does anyone else have that problem?

I think music collection addiction should be a recognized disease like gambling addiction. I do totally fit in this category. I know it is way bigger than it needs to be and I have tried to complete collections for artists that I have little interest in other than the time I am collecting for them. It is hilarious how I will got nuts and fixate when I am missing a little part of the collection like an album or two then I quickly lose interest after I get what I want. I just keep telling myself I will eventually listen to the music when I am retired.

As soon as I read MediaMonkey supported 100,000+ songs, I knew I had found my player and bought a lifetime license.

It's a sickness and I am so lucky my wife is understanding. Of course, it probably helps that I overlook her video game addiction which is also quite expensive to maintain.

Stocklone you make me smile :)

I can fit it this category too, but not completely... I'm not sick.
I have lot (I mean LOT) of music, but I'm listening to everything I own. I extensively use Auto-DJ function.

Why wait for tomorrow? If there's music I don't like anymore I just hit DEL key!

I fit. I listen to a very wide variety of music from many different countries. 60-70% of what I listen to now I did not listen to 3-4 years ago.

I maintain a small collection of 50-100 GB of favorites. The physical mini collection makes it easy to find good stuff using the location view. This is where I go to get sure winners for a play list or CD. I play the mega collection when I feel like it. Grabbing winners when I find them and put them into the winners area.

That is the best of both worlds.
