For me, this only seems to have started happening since the last two MM5 builds. It also seems to have coincided with the fixing of the "Exception on windows restart/shutdown" bug in the last two betas, so maybe this was obscuring the other issue for me.

I don't use any cleaners, but I've recently updated to Kaspersky Cloud Security so will check this, and my whole computer, for any other software that might be doing this. I also wonder if there's something common to our computers, of the users who have reported this bug on here?

I don't think that the reason for this behaviour is caused by any sort of cleaning tools. Simple reason. I don't use them.

As pbryanw pointed out this is happening since the last two MM5 builds. 2262 & 2264. My "pop rock" installation, which is still 2261, is not affected.

It was caused by change in 2262. In previous builds settings wasn't saved when system is restarting. Since 2262 we've added code to save settings before restart and for some reason settings isn't saved correctly (even when we've added code to save settings to temporary but it looks it doesn't work well).

@PetrCBR - Thanks for your explanation. This makes sense to me now, and I'm glad I can rule out any software on my PC being the cause of this. I look forward to seeing a fix for this in a future build.

Odly, this only happens the first time I open MM in the morning. I can open and close it all day and night with no issue. It is the next day when it happens.
So it sounds rather that the Disc Clean is doing a housekeeping and deleting your C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\MediaMonkey5\persistent.json file causing the settings lose?
Could you the first thing in the morning go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\MediaMonkey5\ and check that the persistent.json file is still there ??

You do know that Disc Clean (aka %windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe) is part of Windows, don't you?
I would think that the possibility that it is deleting json files from C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\xxx would be about zero.

From what I see here the affected users are saying that:
- the settings is lost even when MM5 is closed before Windows shutdown
- it is lost regularly in the morning (before MM5 is launched)
=> this indicates that something (not MM5) is deleting the persistent.json file

I can hardly see this in a MM debug log, so it would be helpful if the affected users could check/inspect existence of the persistent.json file after MM5 close and before MM5 start to have a clue.

I resolved it (for 2265) by saving also copy of persistent.json (as persistent.json.bck) and checking the file on MM5 start (persistent.json.bck is used whenever persistent.json does not exists or has different file size).

@Ludek - Hi, thanks for your help. I am one of the affected users. In my case:
-the settings aren't lost, when MM5 is closed before Windows restart/shutdown - so far for me. It's only triggered when I leave MM5 open, before restarting or shutting down my PC.
-the time makes no difference as to whether the bug is triggered.
-this only started for me when I updated to 2262. I also can't think of anything that's changed on my PC, between builds 2261 and 2262, that could have caused this issue, and the resulting reset/deletion of persistent.json.

However, with the change you've made in 2265, I can see this fixing the issue for me, but this still doesn't explain why persistent.json & therefore my UI settings, are being reset/deleted in the first place?

Hi, finally I most probably found a glitch in MM5 code that was causing the issue.

Should be fixed in 2265.

Thanks for your input!

Yes, that sounds good.
I had never experienced the issue, but I just did as pbryanw described:
  • open MM5
  • change skin
  • reboot PC while MM5 was running
  • restart MM5 ==> the skin change did not persist

Hi, I've just updated to beta 2265 in the past few days.

So far, after a couple of days of rebooting and shutting down my PC, with MM5 still open, I've had no further problems with UI settings being lost or reset.

Thank you for fixing this.
