Moving files between iTunes DB and MM5 DB artist name is lost

Post by MMhow2 »

Just when I have this thing up and running...

Now that I have been able to change the target location of the songs and the corresponding playlist, this.

When I go to change the file path associated with the respective song I go to

Song name > File Properties > Basic > Auto-organize

Once there I try to change the file transfer properties to include the "Track Artist" label. MM5 changes all the <Artist> information to "Unknown", then the song title. Itunes shows the path as Music > Artist name > Album title > Song name.

I have tried both ways of "Move and rename files to new destination based on file tags" and "Copy files to new destination based on file tags". Both yield same results. Trying to get MM5 to store and display files so they display as Title, Artist in the MM5 dashboard.

That would indicate that the files don't have a value in the Artist tag. This is necessary for Auto-Organize Files to work as it uses the tag information to create the folder/filenames: https://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/WebHel ... nize_Files

If the folder/filenames already have this information you can use the reverse of this process and use Auto-Tag from Filename: https://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/WebHel ... lename/5.0 Just make sure you verify the changes before applying them.

I was able to dig in and finish the last issue we had. I did a fresh install and ran into this when changing the song path from iTunes to MM5. All the information in iTunes is 100%. MM is just not importing it.

I reviewed the links you posted and tried dry-runs of them before actually starting the process. I feel it was accurate, as it show the proposed results before executing.

Here is what I am seeing when following the directions in the link you sent;

It could be that iTunes never saved it to the files, not being familiar with iTunes I don't know if it has a method to force save of tags to files like MediaMonkey does.

How did you import the files from iTunes, via the Add/Rescan
[x] Import files, playlists, ratings, and playback history from other applications:
-- [x] iTunes
?
I mean this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4z9zuavpr6bxh ... 3.png?dl=0

Yes. I used that feature and I am still not getting the artist feature in the migration. The artist field is still blank even though it shows correctly in iTunes.

As I have done two reinstalls, I want to resolve the artist issue before fixing the file paths from iTunes to MM and the playlists as well.

OK, so probably debug log (item 4b here: https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=30 ) would show why the import from iTunes fails for you. Just be sure that you have selected also the folder where the iTunes files resides (as MM5 scans the folders for media files at first and then assigns the metadata and playlists from exported iTunes XML library file).

And one other question: Was this dialog shown for you during the import: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bhesbjh8okico ... 8.png?dl=0 ?
AFAIK iTunes no longer auto-exports the XML database (by default) and it must be exported manually from iTunes and loaded via the [Browse...] button or 'Share iTunes Library XML...' needs to be enabled in iTunes.

Yes the import/share box was checked in iTunes. In my version of iTunes, it was selected by default.

I am not sure what you are referencing in your link as "4b". I looked in the help files and did a search for "DeBug mode" and did not get a return. How do I run a debug log?

Looks like he sent the wrong link - it's https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewt ... 30&t=86643

I uploaded many addons to MM's addon page, but not all of those were created by me. "By drakinite, Submitted by drakinite" means I made it on my own time. "By Ventis Media, Inc., Submitted by drakinite" means it may have been made by me or another MediaMonkey developer, so instead of crediting/thanking me, please thank the team. You can still ask me for support on any of our addons.

Thanks Drakinite

Ludek, I am just having time to work on this again. I have the DeBug and have the report. Did you want me to email it to you or?

Hey guys, getting pretty frustrated with getting MM up and running. Not sure what is going on with my setup, but I have been posting a lot trying to get this working as expected.

There should be a import function without having to go through and change paths on each song, even if there is a bulk tool.

I sent in a support ticked a few days ago as instructed with a log. Can we get this figured out finally?

Hi,

analyzing your stuff now and seeing that your iTunes_Music_Library.xml does include the artist info / metadata.

But your debug log (MM5 DeB 5-30-21.LOG) wasn't generated using debug build -- so I cannot see what happened during the import from iTunes:

1) Please download and isntall this debug build: https://www.mediamonkey.com/beta/MediaM ... _Debug.exe

2) Run DbgView

3) Import the iTunes_Music_Library.xml (Add/Rescan > [x] Imports files, playlists from othe applications > [x] iTunes)

4) Save the ouput from the DbgView app to a file, compress it (rar/zip) and attach to the eSupport ticket

If the file is too large ( > 2MB) then upload the file to a free file hosting service (DropBox, RapidShare, FileDropper, MediaFire, ...) and share just the link to the file

Thanks!
