MM3 will not be able to use MM4 Database or even if it loads it it will most likely corrupt it.

Many MM users value their play data and I am sure many won't like losing it.
Hasn't there been some sort of utility developed to migrate it across to MM 4?

Peke is saying that the MM4 database isn't backwards compatible with MM3. However the MM3 database can be upgraded to MM4 (just like MM2 to MM3).

It updates the same way as always MM introduced any past updates to database. Although backups of Original is recommended as same as Full Maintain in MM3 before upgrade.

What does upgrading the database do? Will it make MM handle the DB faster or something?

And yeah : Alpha testing before Christmas FTW!!

already done:

http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 19&t=54156

My impressions (this reffers to the second one posted, I haven't tried the one that was uploaded yesterday): I like it but I'll hold off until it comes into a more robust build, the default Vitreous skin is very nice, especially the way seek bar and song info are inplemented, same with voume and visuliser. Video playback doesn't seem to work here: MM crashes when I try a video on it. Don't particularly like the way tabs are used for changing the album art panel between "now playing" and "selected" I think a title bar/button like what iTunes has would be better. There seems to be a few looming bugs with gapless playback (and not being able to configure the output plugin to correctly play gapless tracks gaplessly) and the micro player. Everything I haven't mentioned is either a nice little touch, I haven't noticed it or not really worth pointing it out as it will no doubt be fixed by the time it leaves alpha stages.

Video works pretty well here and I am already busy to reorganize my video-collection with it.
A few errors here and there, but no severe problems as far as i can tell.
I follow all developer builds, but will keep silent until the developers give an ok to start sending in bug reports.

@YippieYeah
That is why this is called Pre-alpha (Deliberately released with known bugs/issues), so that features can be hammered. also Art browser is one of youngest features added to MM4.

oh sorry, I saw someone else on the board link to that thread saying it was a public alpha. Still, it's nice of them to let us try these out.

...what is the risk here...? I can live with MM crashing and functions not working but will I risk my music collection and/or MM database? I can hardly wait to try the MM4... :D
