Setup Advice for Multiple Users
I'm new to Media Monkey. I'm trying to setup a library on a network NAS that both myself and my wife can access. It really seems to be an ignored feature to want to create one library that multiple people share. I can't find talk about it on the forums.
How should I set it up? Should we have different libraries that point to the same music files?
I want to use the auto-organize feature to restructure all of the filenames and directory names. Should I be running auto-organize only on my computer?
Can we have separate ratings for music files? I guess this depends on whether we are sharing music libraries.
Will changes she makes with Media Monkey on her computer affect my library? Again, I guess this depends on if we have separate libraries.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd suggest using separate database so each can have their own ratings. I suggest that your wife gets read/only access to the files (NAS permissions) so she can't modify files on the NAS. This means what every she tags/rates doesn't get saved to the files (you can also disable saving of tags within MM, but read/only is more secure).
You'd setup Auto-Organize only on 1 PC. The only detail that can be a problem is that if she rescans she'll get your ratings, unless you disable tag updates, but then she wouldn't see any tag updates.

Re: Setup Advice for Multiple Users
What is the suggested method for installing MM for multiple users on the same PC ?
Can I control where the library is located and put it in a shared directory ?
I'm happy for everyone to be able to update ratings etc.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

My apologies for not reading the link above which explained how to share the library.

Re: Setup Advice for Multiple Users
It is not clear to me if the setup process suggested can also work for non-networked computers.
I have two users that login to the same computer (windows xp). My request is that each user can create their own rating on a common mp3 file.
So that when i login I can see my ratings and when the other user they can see their ratings. I trust the other user enough so that they will not delete things like songs and playlists (but I do have them backed up just in case also).
Any suggestons?

Re: Setup Advice for Multiple Users
Rating is only saved once in a file. So this can be problematic. For starters you'd want 2 separate DB's (1 for each user) and for 1 user you likely want to disable tag updates (set files to read-only for that user for better security).

as far as i know just place shortcut in the programs folder of the all users account, and it should be run like normal by any user. If all users have full permissions,, if they don't you might need to go on each account right click the shortcut and make it run as it is an admin user account starting it.carnaige wrote:I'm looking to do this too, can you advise if you succeeded or can anyone else chip in?Stephen B wrote:What is the suggested method for installing MM for multiple users on the same PC ?

Re: Setup Advice for Multiple Users
Hi, using Windows 8.1, under C:\Users\ there is not an option for 'all users'. Can I get both users to link to the same mediamonkey library / db files? My wifes account is a standard account (not admin).carnaige wrote:as far as i know just place shortcut in the programs folder of the all users account, and it should be run like normal by any user. Re: Setup Advice for Multiple Users
try going in to admin, and setting up the mediamonkey folder and program exe to run in your wife's account as if it was being run by the admin account..
and then place the shortcut to mmw, in your wifes desktop or start button's all programs menu, while your in the admin account.
then find way to turn off fast user switching, and do that. make all users log off in order for the other users to get in to their user accounts.
its one way of keeping the errors to one known user, i just don't like fast user switching.
making that mm exe to run as if in admin mode when she is logged on i believe will work for you as long as you set it up in the admin account.

Re: Setup Advice for Multiple Users
Best way to do this would be to install MM with the "Portable" option. Choose an install location that is accessible to both users, like somewhere in the "C:\Users\Public" foldercarnaige wrote:

Re: Setup Advice for Multiple Users
Since the database is not really meant to be shared with multiple users (possibly simultaneously) over a network, is there at least an easy way to keep playlists in sync between 2 separate databases that have the same tracks in them?
