Can't see Plex server?

Post by Agrajag »

I'm a little confused about what I'm experiencing and am hoping someone can clear it up. I own mm gold and mma pro. When I was on my home network mma could see both mmw server and my Plex server.

Now I'm away from home and mma isn't seeing either server. It's possible I goofed and shut down mmw before I left but the Plex server is always running and I verified it's live.

How can I get mma to see the Plex server? I realize it can't see it unless it knows about it some other way than over local WiFi. Can I fix this on the client end or only the server side or neither.

MMA can only see DLNA/UPnP servers on the local network.

I'm not entirely sure I see much benefit in that feature. If I'm on the local network then the server can feed most everything without needing Android. Android really comes into use when I'm outside the network. This is that I was getting at in the Cloud discussion and why many of us find such solutions to be more convenient. Google Music lacks the features of MM but is far more flexible. MM has the features but lacks the flexibility. Kinda frustrating, but thanks for the clear response. Much appreciated.

It's possible to make your home DLNA servers (which I think includes Plex) visible to the outer Internet. I wouldn't do it, myself, because the DLNA standard was not designed to have the sort of security you really want in place when exposed to the Internet. Maybe some servers are secure, but I doubt they all are.

I think there are Android-based players that can be configured to access a DLNA server at a remote location, but I don't have one to recommend.
