Delete emptied folders option is greedy

Post by permster »

The "Delete emptied folders" option is deleting folders from a different location than what I have specified in the auto-organize rules directory. I have the folder monitoring set to monitor \\nas\music\new and \\nas\music\library but I only have auto-organize set for \\nas\music\library. Which means it moves music over from the new folder to the library folder. The new folder is essentially a staging area for new songs. The delete emptied folders option is deleting folders from \\nas\music\new. In fact after auto-organizing the files and pulling them over from new to library it even removes the "new" folder altogether.

Is this expected behavior? Seems like a bug to empty folders that aren't in the directory specified in the auto-organize rules. I still want my main library to delete emptied folders but I don't want it removing folders from \\nas\music\new.

Are you using Auto-Organize Files on the new folder manually? It also features a delete empty folders option.

I'm not sure what you mean by using auto-organize manually on the new folder. The only place I have the new folder configured is in the file monitor. I'm not using auto-organize on the new folder at all, manually or otherwise.

How do you transfer files from the new staging folder to the regular library folder?

Using auto-organize. If I have the new folder monitored but only the library folder set to auto-organize then it transfers the files over from new to library folder.

Pretty sure this is just a bug with the way I'm using auto-organize to essentially import my music from the new folder. If I turn off delete emptied folders in auto-organize it fixes the issue but will now potentially leave empty folders in my library as files get changed.

sounds like you're using Auto-Organize on the new folder, thus empty folders are deleted per setting.

No, I've already stated that auto-organize is not configured on the new folder. Hence why I'm calling this a bug.

Then how do you get files from the New folder to the Library folder? Somehow the folders become empty in the first place as only then would it trigger their deletion.

Looking at this further I see what is going on. I have file monitor pulling things into my music collection from the "new" and "library" folders. The key part there is that it's adding them to my music collection. From there auto-organize is organizing files in said music collection to just the library folder. So that explains the behavior.

I guess if that's how it works then how do people normally (safely) import new tracks into their library without auto-organize clobbering the root "new" folder? Do they just copy them straight into the library folder somewhere and let auto-organize do it's thing? Perhaps just adding a file at the root of the "new" folder that won't get imported might do the trick. That way it's never fully emptied so it will never get deleted.

You can set Auto-Organize to work on any Collection or Playlist. So you can create a Collection or AutoPlaylist that excludes the new folder and thus have Auto-Organize work only on the Library files.

I know it sounds silly but I put an empty text file called placeholder in the folder and whenever the folder get emptied of its music? files it leaves the folder there.
It works for me ;-)
