I'm having a really hard time understanding why MM4 doesn't manage my files as I expect. Let's focus on just one aspect: scanning.
I have that set to Scan Continuously. To me that means it will enter details of all my files into its database and keep doing that until I disable that valuable option. But it seems to do neither! After a scan, it has unchecked Scan Continuously itself, with no action from me. And the library still contains files that don't exist.

No, Scan Continuously will add any new files in the enabled locations while MediaMonkey is running. Note that this may not always work for network locations.

Thanks. Does it only add, never Delete, without further intervention?
And why do I have to keep enabling this option? Should it not retain whatever l have set until I change?
Is there no way to get MM4 to automatically match the real files?

Folder Monitoring should remain enabled. Make sure you close MediaMonkey 4 properly as many settings are saved on close.
In the Options do you have remove unavailable items enabled (I'm not sure there is auto-delete though).
Music > Files to Edit > Dead Links can be used to locate any deleted files still in your Library.

Yes, but it didn't remove any files. I went through doing that manually.
