MM5 DLNA service

Post by ghines »

My NAS drive is dying and so I'm looking to use MM5 on my Windows PC to stream using DLNA to various devices. It all seems to work fine when MM5 is running but I'd also like it to run as a Windows service so that I don't need to be logged into my PC.

I have successfully set up the service and it seems to start up automatically as soon as the MM5 application is no longer running. However, after a short time, the service stops if I jump around selecting a few tracks to play. I can then start the service again but it stops soon afterwards. I'm seeing some errors in the Windows event log; here is a random example:

Hi,
THX for report. I was again testing DLNA Service for few hours now (after Win 10 22H2 upgrade fiasco) and have found taht MS decided to revert my old settings so it triggered https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=19590 after manually adding my user to Allowed service list MM started to works normally as designed. No Service crashes and so on.

Can you please confirm the behavior?
Best regards,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not getting the "service did not start due to a login failiure" message (though I did when I started trying this out but that error disappeared).

Instead I can start the service but as soon as I start doing anything in terms of browsing for a music track, the service stops and I get an error in the Windows Event Viewer like the one in the original post. I have tried doing the browsing from both Windows and iOS (two different apps) and the same thing happens.

As per one other suggestion in another forum, I have moved the MM5 database to a non-user directory (C:\MediaMonkey5).

Hi, can you please catch this in DbgView and attach the log to eSupport ticket, see item 4B here for details: https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewt ... 30&t=86643

Note that for the service you may need to change 'Capture Win32' to 'Capture Global Win32' in the Capture menu of the DbgView app + you may need to run the DbgView app as administrator (right-click DbgView > Run as administrator).
And be sure that you are using debug build of 5.0.4.2690 , i.e. https://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/MediaMon ... _Debug.exe

Thanks!

EDIT:
Alternativelly you can run just command line MediaMonkeyEngine.exe /SERVICE -- which will run MM as service on your current account

And BTW is this problem new for you? Does it happen with previous version of MM5 (5.0.3), all previous builds available here:

I have exactly the same issue. I'm running MM5 on Windows Server 2022 (I also had the same issue running Windows Server 2019). I run the service with a specific user with the login as service rights. I have tried running the service as local system but it didn't fix the issue. I have MM5 installed in a separate folder with the users having full control permissions.

I also tried to change the DEP settings to just "essential Windows programs and services only" but no effect.

I found that my Xbox, Marantz reciever and Samsung TV's are able to stream with no problem. However I can immediate crash the service if I use MMA from my phone to browse the uPnP server. I recently found I can do it from a desktop with VLC.

The Windows application logs always show a 0xc0000005 error for the crashes.

Any ideas? The problem does not seem to occur if I remain logged in with the MM5 application open but of course that isn't the solution.

I'm afraid I gave up on using MM's DLNA service and instead bought a QNAP NAS drive and installed a Twonky server on it. A more expensive solution, sure, but is better in a number of ways (beyond the fact that it works reliably!) and the QNAP hardware has other uses for me too.
