Bugs in current release 5.0.4.2690 and feature request

Post by TommyK »

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I have a couple bugs and a feature request.

1) When ripping CD's, even though Windows 10 acknowledges with a pop-up a new CD has been inserted, MM will stubbornly see the old CD, and will actually rip it with the wrong titles. Please note Foobar2000 sees the new disk correctly.

2) For MusicBrainz tagging, either your error message is wrong, or your connection logic is wrong. probably 50% of the time, ti says it cannot establish a connection. In Foobar2000 it just says it couldn't find the album

Feature request:

MusicBrainz is very good at classical music and standard Pop music, but it often cannot find Jazz albums or offbeat music, whereas Freedb will find pretty much everything, although it doesn't have as accurate tags as MusicBrainz for classical.
Can you set up a tiered service such that if it doesn't find the album on MusicBrainz, it would go to a secondary source?

Hi,

For testing can you please close MM then go to "%APPDATA%\MediaMonkey5\" and rename/delete cdplayer.ini Also does same thing happen if you make sure MM5 is started prior to inserting CD and/or start MM5 using Run as Administrator prior to inserting CD?

Re 2) to test this we would need full debug log as described at viewtopic.php?f=30&t=86643 in order to see what MM sends to MusicBrainz and what it gets in return.

Once there is multiple search sources it should be be possible to switch to different one. Unfortunately no one yet created search plugin for MM5 and FreeDB can't be used for Ripped tracks.

I have seen this sometimes, when a task from MM gets stuck in the background (Taskmanager).

The MM5 CD ripper is very basic.
I don't use it, because like you I want more from a ripper.

You may need to look at a tool that specialises in Ripping.
I use dbPoweramp.
It automatically gets its tags from 4 independent sources, and defaults to the consensus view.
See this jazz album here. The image shows the optional pre-rip approval panel.
You can see that freedb had some tag differences from MusicBrainz and Discogs and GD3.

FWIIW the those last three sources have taken their values from CD case, and freedb has used what was printed in the booklet. It is ECM album, and is unusual for them to make a printing mistake like that.

dbPoweramp is not free. The pro version id $48 US purchase.

I like it because unlike the MM ripper I can see and control what is going on, and I am able to review and amend the tags before ripping. It is also faster.
Want a dark skin for MM5? This is the one that works best for me .. elegant, compact & clear.

MediaMonkey 5 allows you to manually edit tags prior to ripping.

Ironically, I own DBPowerAmp, but I had completely forgotten it rips. I've generally used it for format conversion because it's wicked fast and it's multi-threaded using all 8 cores, so I can convert my old .ape albums to .flac in a matter of seconds.

Thanks for the tip.

Are you sure that MM settings are set to use all of your threads in Tools -> Options -> General -> Performance? For me it is set to 20 (leaving 4 for general UI) and it uses all 20.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
It is not obvious from the UI. It looks like you can alter only the destination path mask.
But have I read your help text now.

I still hate the workflow, but i will stop making that false assertion in the forum.

Another alternative, which is free and very good, is Exact Audio Copy. I've used it for backing up all of my CD's, creating Bin /Cue files as well as generating flac files for local and MP3 files for portable devices. All rips are checked with Accurate Rip.
