CD Drive Currently In Use when Ripping [#20243]

Post by MattTown »

Hi,

Just started seeing a new error message in MM5. I am ripping a bunch of backlogged CDs and I am now seeing the advice message "Drive E:\ is currently in use" when the drive starts ripping the CD (mapped to E:).

When I first saw this I tried the Cancel and Retry options to no avail - it kept recurring. I tried a bunch of things including clicking through multiple iterations of the dialog box, ejecting the drive, deleting and re-ripping tracks that did get saved during the process, restarting MM, and even rebooting the machine itself. Do difference, the dialog box just hangs there in the centre of the screen.

I finally realised that the ripping process proceeds untroubled in the background, so that if I can just leave the machine alone for the duration of the rip session I'll get the new tracks done. I have found though that it will stall at the second last and last track (13 tracks on the CD being ripped while writing) unless I press the Retry once. Wierd.

I'm not running the debug version but can if you need me to.

Cheers

Matt

If it's reproducible please do.

Are you sure you've launched Ripping only once on the drive? I've not seen this myself.

Reproduced with existing 2811 non-debug:
Closed down MM5
Rebooted PC
Opened MM5 - no other use of the CD drive.
CD into CD Drive
Metadata window opened asking to select between 2 album options, chose no 1 and closed dialog box.
Tools > Rip CD. Accepted album metadata. Pressed OK. Got the "currently in use" error. Pressed Retry at the prompt after 20 refreshes. Rip proceeded through 8 of 10 tracks. Rip stopped at the 9th until I pressed Retry again, same for the 10th. Net result - all tracks ripped but the Date Added field - which should be in track sequence - was affected, tracks 4, 5 and 10 out of sequence.

Downloaded 2811 Debug, ran through same sequence with different CD.
CD recognised, no album metadata screen.
Tools > Rip CD. Same sequence of events with "Currently in use" error. Ripping held up for occasional keypresses, esp last 2 tracks, and the track added values are disordered.

I fix the track order problem by deleting from the database and then scanning the folder that the tracks were ripped to.

Will try again with debugview running. May be a hardware problem.

It is possible that this problem started when I erroneously inserted a DVD disc (that had come with a CD album) and got taken to the MS Store to get DVD player software. Cancelled that but maybe some windows settting stuck .
Have tried deleting the drive in Device Manager and rebooting but symptoms are the same.
Annoying but manageable.

Hi,
Try to rename CDPlayer.ini from https://www.mediamonkey.com/support/kno ... ini-files/ or edit it with text editor like notepad++ and remove whole section of bad CD.

Thanks Peke

Renamed cdplayer.ini to cdplayer.old, new cdplayer.ini file created on first rip. Drive in use error still there, unchanged.

And - I forgot to mention from before - the error dialog hoggs the foreground and seems to have double the track count of iterations behind it, so you can't do anything else with MM until the rip process concludes. A pain if you've got lots of other updates to do.

Hi,
Strange, do you have same error if you start MM using Right click -> Run as Administrator?

Hi Matt,
this kind of error appears once you are about to rip CD that is already playing in MediaMonkey.

Can you confirm that once you stop playback of the CD then rip operation proceeds without error?

Peke - won't have a chance to tell, am having to go back to previous version becuase USB stick not being recognised, fatal for me.
Ludek - I can confirm that the I *do not* initiate play of the CD before trying to rip it, so I can't stop it. The only CD activity is the read which is used to gather metadata for the CD, and that is initiated automatically. Haven't tried suppressing that yet, but as above am returning to V2810, because it did not have these functional problems.

Quick update - rolled back to 2810, USB stick recognised again. CD problem still there.

Hi,
OK, really strange, I do not see any changes in that part of MM 2810 -> 2811. Anyway replied in Ticket.

Hi, am relocating the jukebox to a newer laptop which will use a USB CD drive, will advise whether the problem is resolved or not.

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem when ripping. The cause was related to an outdated add-on "3D Album View".
My solution was to uninstall this addon in version 5.0.4.2690. (It is not enough to do this in version 5.1, the error remains). Then use the latest non debug version of 5.1.0.2814 and the ripping error is gone.

I hope this helps.

Greetings

Re: CD Drive Currently In Use when Ripping - SOLVED

Post by MattTown »

Peke fixed this by replacing Mediamonkey.ini, something in there had screwed my system and he's checking into it.
