MediaMonkey5 to MediaMonkeyAndroid sync issues

Post by Ckerch »

I have used MediaMonkey for serveral years and have been happy with it’s features and decided to try the sync feature to my Android phone. I only use MediaMonkey to manage my music only and no playlists.

I have yet to be able to get it to work. I have tried multiple times but was getting a Global error2 every time. The error would happen after it got well into the first phase of the sync (30 – 60%). I thought it may have been a time out/sleep of the phone issue even though it remained plugged in. I set the sleep function under the developer setting to always on. This still did not help and kept getting the error 2. After every time it would add duplicate and junk files. At times there would be more files on the phone that there was in the main library.

On the last attempt, I would touch the screen every 2 minutes in phase 1. It did make it through the first phase (where it is, I presume comparing to the main library) and the second phase ( setting up the download). However, after more than 10hrs of downloading in phase 3 (downloading files) it disconnected without errors. The library size is 218 GB and 36,272 files.

At this time, I am lost at what else I can try to make this feature work.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

System Setup

HP Laptop 3M68STVK connected to WiFi
Windows 11 (version 22H2)
MediaMonkey version 5.0.4.2690

Samsung S20FE
Android version 13
MediaMonkey Pro (version 2.0.0.1099
512 GB SD car installed

Confirmed network AP’s are not isolated
Phone and laptop are on the same network
Music library is located on a Synology NAS and verified that both phone and laptop has full access to folder

Thank You

I downloaded MMA 2.0 beta and tried to sync again from my "Master Music " windows directory to my "Music" directory on my phone SD card.
MM5 list from my Master Music:
Genre = 27
Albums = 2156
Files = 27797

When I sync'd my phone with the MMA beta, it only selected and downloaded/sync'd 893 files out of 27797 files. However, it did not generate any errors. However, the directory on the phone (Music) is larger than the directory on my PC (Master Music)
MMA beta is reporting:
Genre = 42
Albums = 2346
Files = 29911
On the PC MM5, I have set the Delete other files to "Unselected Library Files" so I would have thought that would have deleted any extra files on my phone that is not in the MM5 library.

No, unselected library files only deletes files from device that are not selected in the MediaMonkey Library (but are in the MediaMonkey Library).

Hi,
Can you check and isolate few files and see their Paths?

MMA generally avoid tracks that are not synced with MMW as if you do not have Device -> PC sync and MMA scans my CAM videos I would not like that these are deleted with sync. That is why we need to determine if files are duplicates or were already on device and their path. Because if you are right then things definitely needs to be improved for both MM versions.

I did select , in this case, under sync list (Library>device) my Active Music Collection and under that, selected "All Active Music Collection"

I also selected delete Unselected Library files.

That is why we need to determine if files are duplicates or were already on device and their path. Because if you are right then things definitely needs to be improved for both MM versions.
Here are a couple of examples:
1) Under Genres, I have a Classic Rock category. I would see a new category of Classic Rock, Classic Rock. I verified under MM5 and Properties in Windows file manager that it does not exist in my Active Music Collection but only on my sync phone file. The other thing is it only on 1 file in the album. Saw multiple instances of this.
2) I have the "Twister" movie soundtrack that is classified under Various Artists. Again with 1 track, it took the composer and created a folder under that name. It kept the genres as soundtrack but also used as the Artist. Another oddity was the bit rate is 0 but size is still 6.7K. Saw multiple instances of this.
3)I would get a total duplication of a directory. For instance, directory labeled "Baker-Pasma Families" would be duplicated under folder "Baker,Pasma Families" . The "-" would turn into a ",". A similar issue was the "-" would turn into a ";". Again a duplicate folder.
4) This one I cannot find a pattern. Again, with one track it made a folder "Carla Thomas; Otis Redding" . I don't have that in my Active Music collection.

If you need more examples let me know.
Before loading the MMA 2.0, I did multiple sync tries with some of those have conversion set on under sync profile. During those times, I would get Global error2 and not finish. That could have caused these extra files and messed up genres, but I don't know. I would assume it would be corrected with 2.0 if setup correctly.

Again, my goal is to take my "Active Music collection" and duplicate (only Music and Album Art only) it on my phone.
My setting are :
* Under sync list (Library>device) I select my "Active Music Collection" and under that, selected "All Active Music Collection"
I also selected "Delete other file in Samsung phone > "Unselected Library files".
* Under sync profile > Auto Conversion > "nothing selected".
* Under sync list (device > Library) nothing selected
Verified correct directory for phone.
All rest is default.

Let me know if these are correct and if you need anything else.

As mentioned, that won't do the trick. You need to set it to All other media files instead.

I went back to the link you provided to review it again.
I guess I interpreted the sentence "Unselected Library files will delete any files not on the Sync List selection that are in the MediaMonkey Library" incorrectly. I was thinking the sync list was generated when initial sync was started.

Thank you for the clarification and will resync again with "All other media files" selected.

Unselected Library files requires files to be in the MMW Library. Thus it won't remove files deleted from MMW.

I decided to delete ALL media from my phone because everything I tried in the past did not work.

I even deleted my old "Music " folder on my phone and created a new phone folder named "Mobile Music".
1) After setting up the parameters on MMW , I first tried to sync it through the USB cable. That failed after just an hour.
2) I went back and deleted all the media files again and using the same parameters, I sync again.
a) After 30hrs of sync time, MMA said it completed with error. It could not download 8 tracks. When I looked up what tracks
they were 1 to 3 songs on 4 albums.
b) Not all files went to my "Mobile Music" folder. Some of them were in \SD card\Android\data\com.ventismedia.android.mediamonkey\files\Mobile Music folder. Even at that when comparing MMA to MMW, MMA Is reporting 1less genres, 141 more albums and 280 less tracks (not 8 as reported in the error)

I believe my settings are correct based off the above posts so something is definitely wrong with the software.

At this point, I don't have faith in this software sync ability. I do like it for managing my music library, just not the sync feature.

Discrepancies could be based on what you selected to be Synced, maybe Podcasts, Audiobooks, Video, TV, etc files weren't included.

Other differences could be based on what's saved in the tags, not all tags in MMW may be saved to the files.

Unfortunately it's a case of finding actual file differences before any conclusion can be reached on how this happened, and the latest MMW and MMA betas would be recommended.

Let me first say, I am not trying to be jerk but I not convinced this software is robust enough.

My sync requirements are bare minimum.
The reason I say this is because I only want to take what is in my MMW " folder and copy/sync to my MMA folder without any changes.
I DO NOT use or have any:
1) Playlists
2) Audiobooks
3) Music Videos or any other Videos
4) Podcasts
5) TV

In my Library, I ONLY have MP3's and Album art. The only tags I control or change are :
1) Genres
2) Album Artist/Artist
The rest are unchanged from when I ripped the CD.

All I am trying is to mirror what is on my MMW folder.
It cannot do that since the last sync separated my library into 2 main folders.

Even the MMW and MMA cannot match when having them open.

Do you have an SD card in the phone? Are you using the latest betas, which include Sync fixes?

I do have a 512GB SD card in my Samsung S20 FE phone. This is where I pointed the MMW5 sync location to use.
From what I can tell, I am using the latest MMA beta version. The MMA version I am using is 2.0.0.1102 with the Pro license.
