Inputting Dates Manually And Having Them Stick

Often I want to clean up the dates for tracks to make things homogeneous but find that if I alter the Date in Properties either it won't take or it goes completely blank the next time I re-open the file info. None of my music files are locked (for instance, I can update the album art tags just fine).

What am I doing wrong here, why can’t I get MMW to predictably, consistently update the Date field? Often I'm copy pasting from a file’s properties that’s correct, it’s not like I’m just making the date format up myself - if it works for the file I’m copying from, I expect it would work for the files I’m pasting to. But that’s just one example, sometimes I type the date, but the results for that aren’t any better.
