Upgrade to 4.0.3 changed my settings back to default values.

Post by NazcaHand »

Hi,

I just upgraded to 4.0.3 (from 4.0.1) and discovered that many settings I had set into the program were turned back to the default values.
For instance, most of my normal ripping settings were changed, and I only realized after ripping a few CDs, and now I need to rip them again.
The location I had chosen was changed to C:\My Music (a folder that didn't exist), and the quality was reverted to the very bad 128VBR.
Also changed back is the filtering I had put on the media tree (the tree nodes I wanted and the Collection options), and the default view.

All in all, a pretty bad upgrade experience. I'll think twice about upgrading the next time around if I have to re-set all my preferences - again.

By the way, the default ripping settings of 128kbps VBR are ridiculous. That was bad quality 10 years ago, and today it's just terrible.

Oh that's actually worse than I thought.

It installed its setup files on the wrong drive (different folder too C:\Users\MO\AppData... instead of D:\User\AppData), and used an older version of the database and ini file to restart itself, so It's like I lost 4 months of data. I can get probably get it back, but that probably means unistalling the new version and starting again.

Uninstall the new version and reinstall and make sure you select the correct install location.

That's what I finally did, but before I had to move by hand the settings folder from one drive to the other (Why there were two of them, I don't know yet). After the install, the "other" settings folder still exists, and has not been cleaned.

Bah. What a shock.... not. This seems to happen to me with every upgrade. I recall being told that version 4 would be the end of this stupidity. Apparently not.

Here's my thread on it from 2011...

Happened to me as well, had to go through and tick all the folders I wanted to include again, go through all the settings and auto organise settings and even had to re-enter my gold key :S That is ridiculous. Please keep the settings when updating I will not be doing this every time there is an update :x

It should keep all the settings when upgrading 4.x to 4.x, however not all settings are remembered when upgrading from 3.x to 4.x due to underlying changes.

When upgrading from 4.03 to 4.05 MM resets certain values such as Podcast directory to c:\users instead of my custom default of d:\podcast. Also when restarted, MM acts like I want to setup for the first time and wants to run the setup wizard. Also defaults to MM settings for audio and video which I have to re-clear. Also CD ripping defaults all reset to wrong drive drive, etc. VERY ANNOYING!

I suspect all of this has to do with tha I keep all my data and some programs on larger D: drive and don't use Users directory for much. C drive is OS drive and SSD and small and don't want it cluttered up. I wish MM developers would break the default dependency on C drive and actually look at how a user has installed and at least ask the right questions.

Thanks.

4.x to 4.x upgrades should keep all user settings including user defined folders.
