Auto-Tag and incorrect reporting on original album art size

I started using Auto-Tag feature recently. Been a great tool so far. Especially for inconstant capitalization, misspellings, and removing unnecessary information from track title.

Auto-Tag is also great for updating my album art, but I have found this to be a multi-step process, and here is why. Auto-Tag will falsely tell you that your album art is a max of 500x500 (or 500 by some number that is proportional to the actual value). When clicking on the album art, it will display it at the lower resolution (i.e. 500x500) and not render it to its actual quality. I find that before I choose the new album art, I need to inspect the original first in “Properties” -> “Artwork”.

Here is an example, same album, only tagged with a single image in Auto-Tag.


Notice the max resolution of 500x500 and the render done at the lower resolution. Now let’s look at “Properties”:


Notice that the album art is quite a bit larger than 500x500. Also notice that the render is much higher quality (much sharper edges on lettering).

Thus, the multi-step process to replace album-art.

Hi,
Please note that due the compatibility issues where some devices (Car headunits, portable DAC, ...) do not support images higher than aprox. 500x500 (some even 300x300 like some Ford infotainment systems) MM will prefer square Album arts.

That is a feature request, just waiting to happen. Been wanting this feature for a while, an automated way to resize the album art and add it back into the tag for these incompatible devices. Much of my digital purchases (depending on service) already have multiple album art tags, ranging from 200 to 1400. Would be nice to reproduce that with my CD collection.

It's my CD ripped collection that needs updated artwork, and I tend to start with the highest quality (color, resolution, focus i.e. not blurry, and same image that is on the CD insert) image. Thus the need to actually see the image in it original form for comparison to the recommended (i.e. "new") image and not a downgraded image. Many times the recommended high resolution image looks better than the downgraded image that is displayed for the current album art, but in reality, the image that is actually in the file is better quality. Currently, I am only worried about Plex, and my 4K TV, so higher resolution is best.

I agree 100%, there is definitely space to improvement, so giving more control over it is a need no mater what ones preferences are.

Resize of image can be set in Device sync settings no matter of original image in tags.

As fro CD RIPs like you I prefer my own scanned images, but I keep them in subfolder often res 4000x4000+ and whole inlets, back. For file I prefer Cover image 500x500.

I've started discussion with other team members to see what can be done in MM future.
