Mp3Tag and original date

Post by sfghryjytjt »

Hi there,

I just upgraded from 4 to 2024, decided the benefits out weighed the loss of discog tagger.

With Mp3Tag does anyone have a way of dealing with original date. Mp3Tag writes to the date tag, you can also manually enter the origdate tag in the side bar but that only appears in the extended tags section in media monkey, I want it in original date.

It just means I can't do loads of albums in mp3tag then move and then import them into media monkey as I can't remember all the original dates, without an extra step.

I use <originaldate> - <album> (<date>)

Then some ifs to use date instead of original date if it's blank or the same and leave out the date after if it's the same

Please see the following on what MediaMonkey uses for Original Date: https://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/WebHel ... Properties

Thanks, so if I'm reading that correctly not every program can read original date, in flac anyway.

Are you suggesting maybe I should rethink using original date?

I just like the idea of having

1967 - album name
1967 - album name (2012)

So the second one is a remaster or different but I can still filter 1960s and get both.

My post was probably convoluted but I'm not actually having an issue with it, just wondering if I can write a tag in mp3tag that goes straight to original date

You'd need to check if MP3Tag can write what MediaMonkey can read, or if you're manually tagging, tag the value in MediaMonkey instead.

Look up Mapping in the Mp3Tag Help file. Using that info and the MediaMonkey table Lowlander linked above you should be able to get it set up to do what you want.

As for the Original Date field, I've been using it in MediaMonkey for many years with no problems, but I usually only use the Year. If known, I try to put the exact date in the comments section. Most of the albums in my collection are newer versions, remasters, etc, I still like to keep track of the Original Release Date (Year) as well as the Actual Release Date (Year).

I may have spoke to soon

works perfectly for mp3, not able to write to flac, something to do with not using id3 and the vorbiscomment not being read or something, i dont know, went a bit doolally reading it all,

i tried the terms in the table lowlander linked but not having it for flac,

i can get ORIGDATE into the extended tags, if i could copy that somehow, copy and swap fields addon doesnt give me that option, i could also add the date to the comments section in mp3tag then use copy swap to save it to the original date field.

has anyone wrote original date to a flac successfully?

I use MM for 99% of my tagging. Don't use Mp3Tag all that much, but like MM, it does things no others can do and it's great to have when you need it. Anyway, I just tried editing the Original Date field in a Flac file using Mp3Tag and verified that it was readable in MM, worked here anyway.

Here's what I have for Mapping in Mp3Tag:

Options > Tags > Mapping
Tag > Source > Target
VorbisComment > DATE > YEAR
VorbisComment > ORGANIZATION > PUBLISHER
VorbisComment > TRACKNUMBER > TRACK
APEv2 > Album Artist > ALBUMARTIST
VorbisComment > ORIGINAL DATE > ORIGYEAR

In Mp3Tag I also have a field in the left panel for editing and a column in the right panel for display. I remember adding the right panel field, but not the left panel field? Don't remember why 'Publisher' is in there as I seldom use that field? It's been many years since I set this up and my old memory ain't what it used to be. If you can't figure something out let me know and I'll do some digging around and see if I can find my settings for it.

Good Luck
