Just one further finding - some of the issues were caused by the auto tagging giving different tracks from the same compilation CD different album names, and this seems to be somehow cached in MM as when I deleted the folder on the stick then corrected it all on the PC then ran a sync again the wrong folder name was sometimes put on the stick - ie the folder names on PC and stick were different. I couldn't figure out why but ended up correcting it manually and all ok in the end.
